Recently, I bought a Lee , 6 cav., 165 gr. Ranch Dog, .30 cal.
All the cavities were gas checked.

Today, I took 3 cavities of the six and plain based them, leaving the remaining three as gas check bullets.
WOW ! !, You can really pile up the plain base bullets with this mould.

A couple of years ago looking around my shop, there were 35 or 40 empty gas check boxes with bullets stored in them, some changes were made and I am now doing just as good in our milsurp matches as I was with gas checks. I have dechecked a couple of 30s and two more 8 mm. ....... Bill

Bill,

Once you get the velocity correct, the plain base bullet will often times shoot as good or better than a gas check bullet.

Not at 2,000 fps mind you , but once you find the correct velocity range for a particular plain base bullet design, you'll be a happy camper.

Ben,
You got that "de-gas checking thing" going on! Looks like a good deer getter though.

Malcolm,

I'm having a good time, I guess that is the " bottom line " to all of this, isn't it ?

Yes, Malcolm I think you're right. That big meplat would be a pretty good deer killer.

Ben, between 1050 and 1150 is where it's at for me, shot a match this summer in a 25 mph cross wind with my 03a3 score was 292-6, but group was 1.5 v 3.5 h........ Bill

Wish we had milsurp matches around my place. I would give it a go!!!
Jadcock, big fun around here, my friend and I seldom miss one. My goal this year was a different rifle each month jan was smle, February was 91-30, March was k-31, April was m-1917, may was Turk, June was 03a3 then I had to bail out, the rest would not hold the black, I may try the m-44 next month, all were plain base this year........ Ben - so didn't short length them to remove the GC, just bored the GC out to full bore?

If I had a cpl wanted to do that, would you work with me/do the work? Not sure, but asking for future reference. Thanx

Makes for some cheap shooting Ben. Lots faster to size too, less fiddling with little metal cups.

Ben,
My NOE 165 Ranchdog 2 cavity was the second mould I de-gas checked by your method! It came out great and is a real shooter between 1050 - 1150 fps

Who in their right mind would have the courage to take a drill it to a perfectly good mold besides Ben?

You can really ruin a good mold ..I followed his instructions and this is what I get...
