How is this stuff as a dehumidifier? Is this something that wiuld work well for storing tools and such in boxes in a non climate controlled storage unit or Morton building?

Damp Rid is calcium chloride. It absorbs water from the air and creates a salt soup in the container. If that container spills, the liquid corrodes the heck out of anything it touches. I wouldn’t use it around my tools.

It sucks up humidity very well. If that is the only criteria, it is cheap and effective. I just feel the down side is too extreme for me to use it around expensive metal. Drill holes in the lid of a 5 gallon bucket of calcium chloride ice melt and stand it in the corner of a warehouse? Maybe. Put smaller jars or pouches in a cabinet with my micrometers? I think not.

Check WalMart pet litter. They had a silica beads used for cat litter. I have not looked lately to see if they still handle it.

very interesting, I did a copy and paste of the link, and then got the "robot or human" so deleted the link. Search for cat litter crystals.
