When some people see a huge company or multiple entities under one holding company (a conglomerate) the word “monopoly” often gets inappropriately tossed around. The anti-trust legislation of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was not meant to prevent companies from being successful. Those laws only applied to practices that fostered “restraint of trade”. If your company has few or no competitors simply because your company is good at the business it engages in, that is not an unlawful monopoly.

It may be difficult to compete against Amazon or WalMart but it’s not impossible. Being large and successful is not the definition of an illegal monopoly. There’s a fine line between government intrusion into the free market and distasteful (but legal) business practices.
