I been buying little trays for seed starting for the last little while and I hate using stuff that's one and done or maybe 2 if you baby it before throwing it away.
I got to running things through my head some today and have come to the decision I can make my own little pods and then square things out to fit in some home made boxes for easy moving and easy re-planting.
permanent [lifetime plus] use type seed pods and waterproofed wooden boxes [waterproofed with garbage bags]

Had to go to town today to register an Otter, but also had to do the Post Office too. Met a customer at the DNR and delivered 15 dozen snares, so not a total wasted trip. Shipped out 28 dozen and got orders for 21 dozen today! Not sure I'll ever catch up this year. People are out hunting, trapping, and fishing because they can't do anything inside with the Covid lock downs.
Cold again tonight, so I have all five dogs in the shop now, Cash thinks he needs to be sitting on my lap whenever another one of the dogs gets a little attention! He helped me load 240 9mm a couple hours ago! The wood pile is taking a beating.

Fiver, I've been starting plants in those little paper "condiment cups", after two weeks they get transplanted to red Solo cups. When it is time to transplant outside, I cut the bottom out of the cup and use it as a "ring" around the base of the plant. It usually costs me about $2 per year, and I give away twice as many starters as I plant.

Spent the day shoveling snow. The guy who plowed the street was nice enough to push about 6 cubic yards of snow in behind my truck, plus there were the sidewalks to do. In between bursts of shoveling I sorted through my stash of loading components. Had a friend return a rifle and ammo I'd loaned him til he could find ammo for his rifle. He report indicates a 30-06 loaded with 220s still kicks like a mule, and still does a good job of anchoring deer and coyotes. Like there was ever a question?

Today I drive an hour for the first of the Covid Vaccine shots. I have mixed feelings about that, but will do it anyway.

I have a Savage M-24 22/410. I've always wanted to sling it, but I've never been able to find the Uncle Mikes set my memory says I have stored away some place. So yesterday I altered a 20 ga barrel ring to mostly fit the 410. Not sure if it's going to work, but it's a start. Still have to do the butt stock mount and straighten out the peep I mounted slightly off kilter.

Ended up with 17 deer out there we could see. Several walked up the driveway and went from nibbling at the bird feed to raising the browse line on the arbor vitae behind the house. It has thus far been a fairly mild Winter for them, but single digits this morning and perhaps a 5 or 6 inch snow pack can't be fun.

Our salvage timber cut resulted in many smaller trees, (maples in particular), being smashed down by the felled ash. This puts the maples tips in easy reach of the deer and they began to browse those immediately.

I'll be backing off on the ice fishing for a while during the "doldrums". I have been releasing fish anyway. I always look forward to fishing again after mid February. Now will be a good time to do some reloading and prep work.

A very good friend of mine emailed me about a shooting match his local club held recently. They call it the Winter War Match and it is shot up in Northern Minnesota. That group does more interesting shoots with Matches like VJ Day and others. They shoot rifles appropriate to the stated match and do so in any weather. Some very serious riflemen. I looked up the Winter War and was again reminded of how little I know of history.

Snowing here, also. Ground already covered. :sigh: Winter Weather Advisory out...................can get up to 2" in some places of northern Arkansas.

220 grain bullets in the '06 do push back a bit. Even the 200 grain castings sent forth at 1900 FPS let you know that the primers functioned.
I'm glad you said that. I was a little disconcerted a couple years ago when I took 311284's up to 1,900 and took a Springfield Sporter deer hunting. The rifle has a hard plastic butt plate and by the time I was done with group testing and zeroing I was beginning to think I had consumed too many soy products.

Don't have those biting black flies in Arkansas. We had them in Michigan, only in the upper portions of the Lower, a bane in the Upper Peninsula.

heh! black flies stand no chance around here, I'm not positive, but I think the mosquitoes eat them.

yeah Just Jim.
I've done the paper cup, Styrofoam cup, longer planter thingies, peat pods, those cups that break down, and I think I'm over all of them.
I'm gonna go to using about 3-1/2" tall chunks of 1-1/2" PVC pipe for the starts and then into quart size containers for the move out to the green house.
we only have about 85-90 days of outdoor growth between hard frosts so I have to have plants up and willing to get going on july 1. [about the day after my last frost date]
I can't do that if I don't have good root structure.
heck I can't hardly do it with good root and plant size when going out there.
I do alright with peas, and brassicas in the hoop houses, but anything requiring heat and time is a crapshoot at best, and,,, well, a maybe if it had more time it woulda done something,, is average.

Dropped 10 boxes at the Post Office today. Have 3 more to get ready and labeled.

No way would I ever have an ebay store, too damn much hassle.

I grew up with Adirondack Black Flies. Used to have to get up at 4AM to plant the garden and be done by 5:30 or they'd be so think you couldn't breath. But, they were gone by 4th of July. Up here in the St Lawrence we have pitiful little wussy Black Flies that aren't a shadow on a real mountain BF. But what we do have is DEER FLIES! I don't know what number comes after 999 gazillion, but whatever it is, that's how many lite into you if you dare enter their territory, which is anywhere outside a screened in structure of some sort. And they don't just bite. They chew into you, slowly and painfully and they generally take a good hunk of flesh with them if you allow it. Pretty sure they rival leeches and vampires as far as bleeding you out goes. Fortunately, they aren't real fast and they squish with a satisfying pop when you crush them. My sheep dog would crawl into a culvert to avoid getting chewed up. Never could find anything that would keep them away. Horrible creatures that rate right up there with ticks and progressives on the pest list.

Yeah, nobody shoots that 220 jacketed load for fun, and the rifle is just a Springfield Mk I barreled action in a gunshow sporter stock with none of the modern amenities like scope, recoil pad, etc. But the rifle and ammo are always ready to go.
