I'll bet all those women had some sort mathematics degrees.

Took a trailways 'tour' that stopped at Oak Ridge in the 60s. Not much more than a 'pit' stop town then. Those gals were actually local HS kids they trained. Do what the manual says, get paycheck (pretty good for 'country' folk) and go home. Got a problem, call the boss.

Look at the width of the tree vs the length of that saw. The tree is wider than the saw.

Notice the axe in the hands of the guy on the right.

Those are MEN

Unionized lumberjacks? Two guys doing the work, two others not doing anything, and a supervisor.

Nope, those two laying down are gov’t workers, probably oversight.

The guy in front is management.

Well, I'd agree 100%, but for the"gov't workers" part. Those who are employed by government do not work.

I work hard!

Are there slow times, sure, I won’t lie, boats come and go, feast or famine. But, I’ve earned every dollar.

I’ve missed a year and a half of my son’s life working overseas/out of state, on temporary duty at other shipyards.

I’ve hauled myself, welding machines, leads/hoses, and my heavy tool bag up and down those dry-dock stairs thousands of times. I’ve crawled so many tanks. They put disgusting things in some of those tanks. I’ve contorted my body and bruised my ribs to make sure the job was done right, to make sure our boys can float back to the surface everytime!

I’ve called the paramedics when my co-workers have been injured, and I have said a prayer when others have died on the job, or been so physically broken they will never work again. I’ve lost count of the folks I’ve seen carted off in those ambulances.

I pay my Union dues, I’m proud of the work that I do, and Thank You all for paying your taxes, and thereby paying my wages.

On this Memorial Day I will remember ALL of our people who have died in the defense of this great nation. Some of them had a parachute fail to open over Normandy, and died. Some of them got knocked off staging into a dry-dock, while repairing damage from the Pearl Harbor Attack, and died.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
So, what's the deal with the large wood chips at the base of this tree that was seemingly notched with a hand saw?

It was notched with the axes. The big chips are where the chunks left between the angled area of the notch and more horizontal saw cut were knocked out. There are old photos around of the progression involved. Some of those trees were multi-day projects.

I wouldn't take everything said here to heart. On the whole, gov't workers (and I was one) aren't exactly overworked. We've all seen the deal where there's one guy digging a hole and 7 guys leaning on shovels watching him. It's nothing new. Same for the difference between union workers and non-union. It's not directed at YOU personally.

Good eye, Charles Graff, I still use Williams cup/mug soap to shave. Nothing like a warm brushed lather. Once I started using the mug all the canned stuff just couldn't compare. I wear a beard but still shave to keep it trimmed.

All the shipyard welders I ever saw worked their tails off. Tree guys are taking slices of the trunk, then making 'shingles' of the slice.

I use a brush and a double edged razor blade. I hate shaving, but I detest having to pay $15 or $20 for 3-5 of the high tech razor blades. I buy 100 "Shark" brand double edged blades for $6-7 and use a good quality razor. The very best shaving soap I ever used was some homemade goat milk soap my wife found someplace. Can't find it again of course. FWIW, Shave Secret DOES work! But the acids in it eat up razors for some reason. I can get 2-3 shaves out of a blade with soap, 1 with Shave Secret. But SS does allow a close shave without having to soak my face for 5 minutes in hot water.
