I did cut a few mini slabs for drying for future lathe turning, and also did same with the Sugar Maple log with Crotch.

The leaves that were still attached, while they were dry and brown (bottom image), looked exactly like the green leaves of this Black locust image (from google search). Also, I goggled Black Cherry leaves, and the images looked exactly like my tart cherry tree and nothing like this Black locust image.

Those are locust leaves. Be happy they aren't Honey Locust like we have here in Thorn Hollow.

SNIP...
Everything was going along nicely when suddenly there was a pretty loud BANG! behind me. Ever have a battery explode? Me neither till now. A 4 year old Exide deep cycle we use on the sheep/goat fence charger was in for recharging. Really did a job on the battery, blew the top and sides off. I was maybe 5-6 feet away with my back to it but didn't get hit by anything. After ascertaining I did not, in fact, need a change of underwear, I dumped about 5-1lbs boxes of baking soda on what did get hit and did a wash down on things. I'm not sure what caused the kaboom, I assume a dead short in the battery. There was good airflow through the area I was welding and it was away from the battery to boot. I dunno. That was $125.00 worth of battery IIRC, so there was pain!

I have had one explode, I posted about it on the other forum in November 2014 right after it happened. Cut and paste of the post, images were gone thanks to Photobucket.

12v battery explodes in my ATV while I am sitting on it, in town, in my driveway.
Wow, still a little shakey
Sounded like a 12 ga shotgun.
Neighbors 2 doors down came over to see if I was OK. They were 'sure' it was a shotgun blast. My first thought was, 'who booby trapped my Honda with a cherry bomb?

Snow is coming tonight.... Yesterday I put the plow on the ATV and it started a little slow and like many times before, I put a trickle charger on it all night and most of the day. I rarely use it in the summer, it's typical for the battery's charge to get low. It is/was a 4 year old motorcycle sized battery.

This afternoon, I go out and disconnect the charger, re-install the seat (which is right on top of the battery), turn the Key to start it, the engine turns over once, then BOOM, honestly as loud as a shotgun.
This Battery is/was a gel type maintenance-free, instructions clearly say, "do not add water". It must have pressurized while charging and the starter engaging took it over the top. I've never had a battery explode before. CRAZY, I tell ya, just crazy.

The good news it's just a battery, I am OK, the ATV is OK, the little gel like acid that was in the battery was easy to flush out and off the ATV with fresh water.

I contacted Yuasa and they said they wanted to examine it, and will give me a new battery if I ship the pieces to them, so I did. Here are some photos. The Battery Rep supplied the shipping container and all labels...Pre-paid of course.

Knew a kid that used 11-12" channel iron to build bumpers on his old 1 ton welding truck. Had to hunt awhile to find a shop able to do an alignment on the front end.

Been fighting what we thought was carpel tunnel syndrome. wrists and hands swelling and sore, can't sleep for the pain welling up, ect. Took an MRI on the neck last week, finally got the results this morning. 3 degenerative discs they think are the cause. Putting me on an oral steroid pack till we can get an appointment for injection of steroid directly into those discs. Somethings got to work, my hands are almost useless right now.

Trying to book a flight to Tuscon in the morning. Bro isn't any better, bronchitis and maybe pneumonia. AA web site is crap. Bro got bumped yesterday, got a flight out in AM, hopefully. Trying to get same flight. He was going to drive but she put her foot down. If I can't get a flight, wife and I may drive.

Keith you said: " Also bought a couple of 16" x 24" x 3/4" birch plywood panels for the floor plates from a local cabinet shop. I need to fit everything together and then get out to the University Engineering lab and use the tester to assess the collapse resistance"

Do you know if that plywood is constructed from all birch veneer? I worked in the plywood manufacturing industry for 30+ years and we made hardwood plywood "specialty" products. The "cabinet grade" plywood consisted of a thin birch, walnut, maple, etc. face and back with spruce, hemlock etc. veneers being used for the center. We did make some all maple plywood as a specialty lay-up that was used for the tops on the Black & Decker work-mates. My thoughts, on reading your post, were that if what you got was a standard cabinet grade wood, performance and cost-wise you might be as well (or better) served using any standard good-one-side plywood. Another concern would be that cabinet grade hardwood plywood is usually (often) made using glue that is not water proof (resistant) and may not stand up to liquids that fall upon it. The plywood we made used a phenolic based glue for exterior/marine grade and a urea based glue for interior uses.

The baltic birch 5x5 panels are the real deal. Yellow pine plywood can't keep from warping. The cabinet-grade spruce with paper-thin birch veneer is decent but de-laminates as Blackthorn said.

I’ll post a picture later. I was looking for the kind of plywood that they used to make desktops for student desks out of. I got what I could get locally right away. If we ever go into production I’ll spend the time and money to order full sheets of the right stuff.

I appreciate the information and advice.

I pitty whom ever runs into the back of my truck... Its rear bumper started as a 8" C channel.... Had to use a tow motor to put it on after welding it all up!! I welded the brackets to the bumper in position cause it was just too big/heavy to do on the bench!! So I made the brackets drilled and mounted. Then added bumper. Its "stout".
Looks entirely functional Minty!!

I was up early to cast some so I could test some new powders.
Videos posted.

Huh. I dunno man, we have oodles of Black Locust up here and none of it has bark that looks anything like that and the wood is a deep sort of olive green-ish brown. Got me.

Knocked down a bunch more hay. Caught one hunka ledge hidden in the grass, wiped out 7 or 8 sickle bar sections! Oh well, at least it's down and drying.

Got a plea for donations from the other "Site which shall not be mentioned". Addressed to me as a "valued member"! Any other "Perma Banned" types get the same thing?

I'm not saying I know exactly what it is. I thought it was some sort of locust, because of the leaves...my Google image search, after you and Ian suggested it may be Black Cherry, lead me to the Black Locust compound leaves.

I went back out to the compost site today and hauled 3 more branch sized logs...there is a fourth, but it's buried deep in the pile. They are real rigid and I already used one for a trellis post for my raspberry patch.

I blocked that email last year, the humor I found in the irony was starting to wear thin after a few years..

Welding on steel within two steps of a charging battery in a semi-enclosed space is begging for disaster. The ignition point of the hydrogen plume actually occurred a few feet from the battery and flashed back to the space above the plates through the vent instantly, causing the battery to grenade. Many batteries blow up when the charging or jumper cables are disconnected and a big spark happens right on top of the battery where the hydrogen gas is originating.

Not much today: Just sharpening & balancing my son's zero turn mower blades! Should get 1 more year out of them.
Now the mower sings!
I told him I can tell when the blades are out of balance....The sound is strange! Sharpen them and re-balance them and the Machine purrs!

Aw man, that's tough. I sure hope they can come up with a solution.

Man you have that right. I moved to a city to go to college when I was 18. I had worked at a sod farm and we all got pretty handy working on equipment. I needed a job and applied at Sears for a job in their garage changing tires. Yeah, right. A week on the job and they had me doing all kinds of stuff, but they wouldn't give me a set of tools. I had to borrow from the full time mechanics and it was very stressful.

Right around my birthday on a night when it was -22 degrees I was told to go out in the lot and jump start a car. We kept a battery on a charger with a pair of cables on a hand cart. I went out in the lot and the yard light wasn't working. I came back in and asked for a flash light and got my young ass chewed out. So I go back out and hook up the car, then in the near total dark I tried clamping one terminal and just touching the other clamp. I thought if it arcs, I have it wrong. Boy did I have it wrong. We never found the top of that battery. The flash and blast was louder than a 12 gauge. A piece of casing cut my forehead, I had acid everywhere especially my eyes. I stumbled toward the over head door basically blinded and started pounding on the panel when I walked into it. A nice old mechanic that had befriended me was the first to get to me. His all but carried me to the big circular sink with the foot peddle and started flushing my face. He pried my eye lids open and flushed and flushed. The crabby ass manager came over and asked if I could see. I said yes, and he told me to drive my self over to the local clinic a few blocks away. I clambered into my 1964 Pontiac Tempest and promptly froze my shoulder length hair to the front seat. I drove to the clinic and sat in the waiting room for 45 minutes. My eye balls felt "gummy".

I have had nothing but the greatest respect for batteries and hydrogen gas ever since.

Couple weeks ago at a gunshow I picked up an NEI mould for my 9.3. Got it out tonight to cast some bullets for size etc. Ran about 150 bullets, mic'd a few and found the box is mismarked: this is a 35 caliber mould.

I think I'll go cast some .490 round ball, hard for even me to mess that up.
