New Shop

Well, for the last week I have been working in my new Shop/Man Cave. We had been planning on building a new shop/garage but decided instead to wall off part of the commercial building on the property and use it. New wall was finished and I have been sweeping, installing a wood burning stove, building shelves and moving in a couple of work benches.

Here is the blank canvas after the wall is completed.

The man door was rusted through in a few places and the door jambs rotted also so I replaced the man door also.

Today I built two sets of shelves and installed two work benches. Also dropped a rug in place to soften the hard concrete.

Not finding those images, stayed tuned!

Once the stove was installed I laI’d and lit a fire. When the temperature got above 40, everything that wasn’t walls, floor or stove was moved into the adjoining space. Swept the floor, twice, then moved the dog crate back in. Yesterday, I assembled two sets of shelving and two small assembly benches.

I also moved two work benches into place. The previous owner did not install any base trim or ceiling trim. I grabbed some boards, cut them to size and install them.

Herself brought up a rug to soften the floor. Our Golden, Seamus, decided it was for him. The alcove is where my desk will go. Maybe book shelves and perhaps closed cupboards.

This week I will move two more sets of shelves from our garage to the shop. Next week, two more work benches will arrive. So, four sets of shelves, four work benches and two assembly benches.

This area is 20’ by 40’. It is a portion of the shop building we hope to rent out. When that happens, if the renter wants this space also, I will move my shop.

Once all the shelves are in place, my work supplies will go on the top shelf of the shelving. My sharping machines will likely go on the two light benches in the corner. My carpentry tools will go on the shelves as will my casting tools. For the first time in decades, all my stuff will be laid out on shelving and visible. No more digging through totes and boxes in a crawl space to find the tool I need for a project!

The missing trim was the first thing I noticed! $8 million in beautiful wood on the walls and ceiling and missing a few dollars in trim to close it out, glad you got it fixed! Some mounts on the walls, a couple Italian leather chairs in front of the stove, and a small liquor cabinet and that space would be heaven.

I'd forego Ian's liquor cabinet and replace it with dancing girls.

But not girls and liquor, that leads to trouble.

A nice antique roll top desk would fit right in.

Beautiful space. Don't mind sayin', I'm a bit envious. Went back and looked at the dog several times; we love dogs.
Can I assume that your sharpening tools and setups are on the other side of the building? Having a little experience sharpening knives and straight razors, I'm interested.

First thing I saw also. The kicker? This was part of a cabinet and molding shop. On the other side of the wall is a 22 x22x16 foot kiln. Trees were logged locally, slab by local mills, dried in the kiln and turned into siding, flooring or moldings in the shop. The wood on he walls is there because it has some defects that kept it from being sold, or it was not a good species.

Hoping to rent out the rest of the building.

The sharpening equipment will be in the shop, probably back by the stove. The work benches will be for wood work, gun building, cast, reloading etc.

I make a living sharpening things. Been doing it full time for a dozen or so years. Pop taught me to sharpen when I was six. Wish I would have decided in High School to do this. Instead, it is my sixth career! Hopefully, my last.
