Ok, different rifle, but related question. Yesterday, a rifle turned up in a shop. Small ring Mauser, nicely sporterized, Buehler base. Marked "unknown .25 caliber" no stamp, definitely a commercial barrel and sure looks to be a .25, almost certainly a .257 Robert's, which would be kinda neat.

It is nice stocked, unfortunately with a left handed stock that has a roll over cheek piece. Looking at it, I have to wonder if that cheek piece could be ground off and the stock reconfigured to make it a right hand friendly rifle. Anyone done this before?

I have taken a right handed cheekpiece rifle, took the cheekpiece off and used the rifle left handed with no problem. You are left with the comb for a cheek weld but that has never been an issue for me. I lot depends on the configuration of the stock. Will there be enough left after the alteration or not? One could graft another piece of wood on but that takes some finesse and talent to avoid making it look like Bubba took over.

Would likely make a lowball offer for the rifle and try to sell the stock on eBay. May take a while to find a buyer who is into small ring Mausers and is left handed.

me!!!!!

i could, but i got too many Mausers and Krags and Carcanos rifles that needs werk. i got a sporter '16 Spanish Mauser that needs a 257 Roberts barrel and D&T for a scope. besides, just this year, i got 10" barrels for my Contender in 30 and 357 Herrett and dies.

I didn't post a picture of the rifle in question. I think you're looking at one of the rifles pictured to show what kind of after market stocks are out there.
