chuckle.
yeah, I think back to when 38 special, LC type 30-06, and 30 carbine brass littered the ground just about everywhere.
I have maybe picked up 4-5 38 cases in 15 years, and I don't remember finding a single 30 carbine case since I moved to Idaho.

RB - BEAUTIFUL Antique Heddon rod! Here is what I found from a classic fly rod forum... Googled "Heddon #10 9' 2 1/F HCH or D", below {my notes in brackets}

quote - "HCH or D". That is the line weight. HCH is a 7-weight and HDH is a 6-weight. {makes it a 6 or 7 wt line rod; hvy trout/bream, wheelhouse for bass or lite salt; But, old line rating, so I would bet/guess that it would fish best with a modern 6 wt line}

This rod was made during Heddon's Neo-Classic Era (1939-1948). The Model #10 was a lower grade rod in the Heddon lineup, but still a quality fly rod. The 2 and 1/2 ferrule size is a Bass-Heavy Trout Action or Class rod. {see Bass/Hvy trout rating; also understand, a lower grade bamboo then is like handmade now! Kinda like an old Colt or Smith! they just don't make them like that anymore} endquote

It will be (most likely) a very slow action rod (which is much easier to learn on, imo. Varnish looks as new/pristine! It is a beautiful set! jealous! If you decide to play with it, let me know. Have a cpl things that might help and happy to help you.

What if I told you I had a pair of very similar Grainger's known to be pre-war in similar condition ..... 1 has a broken but repairable tip and the other has a warped tip but are complete tubes socks and both tips .
Also what I'm lead to believe is a first edition of Lee Wolfes guide to fresh water fishing .

That confirms it was definitely bought in the islands , my grands and great Aunt arrived in 39 , June and November of 41' .

I may have to figure out a side trip if I ever get enough money scrapped up for another road trip .

Spring thaw sucks. Can't really get in the yard and can't quite turn off the wood stove. My youngest son helped me take my dog box off, and we started a shower unit install today. Need to get the drain below grade so can't get a jack hammer until tomorrow, but got all the prep work done. Wife brought home a cheap picnic table last fall, with rotten legs. Soooooo, I made a new base from a picture in one of her craft magazines she liked. Now she thinks the top looks too bad to use!! So she pretty much suckered me into making her a new picnic table, never mind we already have three. Also cut a piece of countertop for her for a future project.
Snow is really melting and if forecast is correct we should see the yard by the end of this week. I'd just like to stop throwing wood in that ever hungry box out in the yard! Used about 15 chord this winter.
Sized and lubed about five pounds of those 360-160-WFN Hp's tonight.
Back to work in the wifes shop tomorrow. She did make me some homemade bread and a big ham today.

My neighbor asked me if I could fix his two .22 rifles he uses to shoot rats, coons, and wood chucks. Just like my property, these varmints get a free pass if they just don't undermine things, eat chickens, and stay out of the garden. Anyway, these two sorry specimens, (an old 10-22 and a Remington Model 33), received exactly the same loving care as a claw hammer or a crow bar. I stripped, cleaned, and mounted a scope on the 10-22, (he mentioned he just can't see the sights anymore), at got it zeroed and chewed out a dime size group at 25 yards and returned that one the same day.
The Model 33 needed more attention. I wish now I had saved every bit of lead and crud out of it and put that on my digital scale. Apparently the grand father he inherited it from used bird shot in the barn to kill "sputzies" and I never saw so much lead in a .22. The ring ahead of the chamber had to be squeezing a solid bullet down to about .215". No wonder he told me he couldn't hit the hill across the road with it. Eventually I got it cleaned to bare metal. Cleaned up the action, (more crud), and bolt, put it in the stock, tightened the stock bolt and.....it would not cock. What???? I finally realized the trigger was hitting the trigger guard and preventing it from cocking. I never did determine what the reason for that was, but the solution was to grind enough off the tip of the trigger to clear the guard. I drifted the front sight to get windage correct as the rear was already off center and once zeroed, gnawed the 10 ring right out of a pistol target at 25 yards. When I returned the rifle yesterday my neighbor said it wouldn't cock for years if you tightened the stock bolt!
There was some Bondo as a stock repair where at one time their may have been a peep sight installed. The elevator is missing but since it hits 2" high at 25 yards already an elevator was not going to help. He is just tickled and I enjoyed the experience too. I gave him the scope, mount, and a 525 pack of Federal 36 gr. hollow points that I used for zeroing. He keeps us in eggs and refuses to take a dime for using his dumpster, saving us a considerable monthly bill. They live about 600 yards away and don't mind my shooting in the slightest. His wife is a County Board member and they are just plain good neighbors!
It has finally stopped raining and I have a good sized dead red elm down along one of my field roads. In the process of dropping it I screwed up my Husquavarna 350. I need to get my Stihl 036 sharpened up and go block that up, split it, and add that to next Winter's wood pile today. Boy, does sunshine ever look good. The sucker run is just getting started, and I have a request for a cooler full from an elderly farmer who like to pickle a couple dozen every Spring. It is going to be a couple days for the mud to drop in the river though.
Now that I have the Kidd rifle up and running, it is time to start doing some serious ammo testing. No boredom here at Thorn Hollow.

I've probably got a gallon plus of 9mm picked up and don't even own a 9. Son and son-in-law both shoot 9s but haven't been able to talk either one into loading for them. Offered to cast the bullets myself. They say that as cheap as the ammo is and no more than they shoot it they'll just buy store bought.

nope, too late,, he already Bra'd you.

got another 1/2" of soft frost this morning.
I really wish our ambient temp would just go up about 10* and be done with it already.
ice on one side of the yard and mud on the other.
there used to be grass, I'd put some seed down but it'd never germinate.
maybe one of these day's I will just buy another roto tiller, tear the whole thing up, and start over.

too many people.

we are just about to go over 2400 people here and I'm thinking about moving on to somewhere with more elbow room.
we would probably have more here but the heart attacks from shoveling snow and the frostbite keeps the numbers down.

I don't think 9mm is available in several stores anymore. Seems the CV19 bug has caused a run in 9mm guns and ammo. Speaking about CV19; it's in Montgomery Co. now, keep your head low.

Yeah, the town I work in is around 1200 pop., I don't live there, 5 miles out. Heck, they don't have a stoplight unless you count the RR crossing.

Dang, knee still hurts too much...no smelting for me, may as well put that off for another week or so.
I guess I'll just sit around in the garden/yard this afternoon.

Oh, I planted a flat of Tomatoes yesterday. I wonder if the green houses are planting? and if there will be plants for sale in May?

My mother is 87 years old. The last couple of times I've been to the grocery store, I've asked her if I can get anything for her. She keeps telling me no. She'll just go to Brahms and get whatever she needs. I think the problem is she's so addicted to Braums, she uses shopping as an excuse to go.

RB, BIL has one of those from his dad. Nice rod but a little stiff - use heavy line and big flies, it works. Worms, crickets etc for bass - line floats so it doesn't get fly stuck on the bottom. Saw today some astrophysicist went to the hospital with magnets stuck in his nose - trying to invent a buzzer for when your hands get too close to the face!
From my bro.

The CARES Act is a $2.2 trillion economic stimulus package to protect the US economy as we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Q: What is an economic stimulus payment?
A: It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q: Where will the government get this money?
A: From taxpayers.

Q: So the government is giving me back my own money?
A: Only a smidgen of it.

Q: What is the purpose of this payment?
A: The plan is for you to use the money to buy things, which will stimulate the economy.

Q: What kinds of things?
A: Things like high definition TVs, iPads, and SUVs.

Q: Wouldn't that just stimulate the economy of China ?
A: Well, OK— here's the deal:

  • If you spend your stimulus money at Walmart, the money goes to China or Sri Lanka.
  • If you spend it on gasoline, the money goes to the Arabs.
  • If you buy a computer, it goes to India, Taiwan, or China.
  • If you buy fruits and vegetables, it goes to Mexico, Honduras, or Guatemala.
  • If you buy a fuel-efficient car, it goes to Japan or Korea.
  • If you just buy useless stuff, it goes to Taiwan.
  • If you pay your credit card off or buy stock, it goes to fat cat management bonuses, which they will hide offshore.
If you really want to keep the money in America, you need to:
  • Spend it at a yard sale, or
  • Go to a ballgame, or
  • Spend it on prostitutes, or
  • Buy beer, or
  • Get tattoos.
These are the only purely American businesses still operating in the US.

The Best Solution: Go to a ballgame with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard sale and drink beer all day.

Well, ball game is out!
