Got a new 721 today, another 30/06

I received my new tome Remington 721 today. Pretty nice grain in th stock but has to be refinished with a new recoil pad. The finish on he stock now is thick and seems to be hiding some of the nice grain in the stock. It has sling mounts I’ve never seen before but they look nice. The bore is perfect and I will Acrglas it before shooting for accuracy. The bluing is 95%, even the floorplate. It has a very nice Weaver K8 which will go on a 222 and I want another period type scope for this rifle, maybe a K4 or K6. I’m happy.

home done re-finish.
I'd shoot it, probably add some scratches and a new recoil pad, then add some more scratches.

Thanks. I don’t really know why but the Remington 721/722 series are my favorite rifles. They are plain Jane but they reek of the 50’s. This one was made in 1951. I have decided to top this one with a 3-9 Redfield, as much as wanted to use a Weaver K4 I need a little more magnification than that.

Ugg, nice rifle but that finish is horrific. Looks like the last person brushed on some stain for color, let it set, and then varnished over the whole sticky, flaky, chowdered-up mess. Fortunately, I know someone who can fix that for you......

The sling bases are supposed to be inletted into to the wood, like this:

Yes, finish is awful and it pretty nice wood. I plan to remedy that. Thanks for info on sling swivels, I will inlet them while refinishing.

I was going to mention the non inletted sling swivels too.
but if a guy isn't capable of doing that he is probably better off just screwing them down rather than screwing them up.

I bet we all know someone who can fix the stock issues......

Maybe it's just the camera angle, but it looks like if you inlet for the base of the sling swivel, you'd have to carve out a recess for the link too.

The .30-06 is never the wrong answer. In some particular situations it may not
be the very best possible answer, but it is never the wrong answer. I believe every beast
on this planet has fallen to the '06, and probably not just once.

It isn't my personal favorite of all calibers, but it is one I like and use, and recommend.

It took 2 applications of the stripper to get all that thick varnish off but the wood was pretty nice underneath. The end of the forearm was split from the large screw in the sling swivel base. Looks like it was installed without a pilot hole. The crack was so oil soaked epoxy would not stick. I cut it off and added a piece of spaltd maple on the tip. I’m happy with it. It now has 6 coats of tru oil with steel wool polishing between each coat. I have never claimed to be a stock maker and I know I ain’t but I did inlet the sling swivel bases. I used some Redfield bases and rings a Redfield 3-9 scope. I bedded the action in Acraglas and free floated the barrel. The recoilpad is a Pachmyer Decelorator. The trigger was cleaned and adjusted to a crisp 3# pull. The barrel looks pristine new and I hope to get it out to my backyard range soon.

Nice piece of kit Malcolm.. My dad had one in .270 Win. I stupidly sold it. He hunted with it for many years to put the family winter meat in the freezer. He shot it with open sites and would neck shoot mule deer with it. He didn't like scopes. Still considered one of THE finest actions Remington ever put out. I kick myself every time I think about having sold it. The action was like it ran on roller bearings and locked up tight like a vault.

Thanks to all! It was a fun job to bring some life back to a nice rifle. As I said before these 721/722 Remington’s are my favorites.

The floor plate was not reblued, most of them are rusty and worn from carry. It did have a trigger shoe at some point.

May get to range next week if it gets out of the 105-107 index . Too hot for me.
