30-30 powders

I was gonna say RX7 and 748 but Will beat me to it. Why? They cover my cast bullet loads from 150 gr/2250 fps to 170 gr/2100 just perfectly.

Having 93-230 gr bullet choices in 30 cal with jackets in 150,165, and 168 gr I'm a dinosaur sticking to Unique and IMR 4350 .

The 325 I had would run all of the 150-165s 21-2300 and 170-180 cast 2100+ with 4350 . Meanwhile the Unique was fun for the click/pop......clink , squirrel slayer quiet loads . I have a mountain of Red Dot I should probably shoot up under the 93s .

I didn't like the NOE 310-230 . I suspect not enough twist the 301618 copy at 175 is nice though and the RD 165 fits also .

I shoot a LEE version of that bullet in the 30-30 with either Unique (7.0 to 7.5 grains) or IMR4350. I don't remember the charge of 4350, but it was all I could get into the case. Manuals say you can get a lot more in there than I could and I don't see a drop tube making that much difference. Either way, all the 4350 that would fit makes fifty yard groups that are difficult to count the holes because they get all crammed together. You also get a lot of "junk" left in the bore but it shoots well. I have only done preliminary testing on my latest 30-30 with either of these but have used both in previous 30-30s with very pleasing results.

I do intend to try full-house loads with a powder I got from Jeff Bartlett years ago which you load like H335, which has been an excellent surrogate in the 223.

By the way, I'd probably try 748, except that the H335 surrogate and IMR (or other) 4350s work so well in the other stuff I shoot. I haven't shot anything in the 357 Roberts or 6.5x55 (jacketed) besides one of the 4350s in probably 25 years. Very convenient.

Always, always, always have Unique on hand regardless of whatever else is available. Not that it's perfect for anything but it's very useful in anything, especially when cast is part of the equation.

The 30-30 is a great round, I think it's harder to find a bad load than it is one that works.
Yep. It is like 45-70, pretty hard to get a good rifle to shoot poorly.

try the 311466 in that 340.
I zip it and the RCBS 30-150 along in mine on top of AA-2230.
the 150's also do double duty in the lever guns with the same load and oal.
I have to change the seat depth for the 466

Late to the party but I get good results with 15 gr WC820 and a 165-175 gr bullet in the 30-30.

waco,
One of my favorite rifles Receiver sights and a Lyman 17 front globe with a Lee Shaver Small aperture!
5 grains of Red Dot and the 165 Ranch Dog ( PC Coated) can shoot it all day with close to one hole accuracy every time ...very economical & very Accurate
( But that is me: "low Node" Jim)

How far down can Rx7 be loaded for 30/30? I tried 18 with 145 & 170 PB, too hot. Loaded some @ 16.5 to try, how low can you safely go?

RX7 is actually more like a fast 3031 even though it is a high-nitro double base powder. You can run it way off past where you think it ought to stop working both directions and it can surprise you. A compressed load in .45 Colt does well and it works in .30-'06 too. Where it ends up on the burn rate charts is about right, being a touch slower than the 4198s and XMP5744, but the thing is it is so much longer-burning than powders around it that the velocities are much higher for the same peak pressure. I still think it does best in bottlenecked cases on the small side of medium and in straight walled cases behind heavy bullets. I also think that being a DB powder, the 80% rule should be observed.

Only book loads I found for 30/30 were 22 for 145ish and 18.5 for 170ish. 0.8 gives about where I was for the 145 and 170 is about 14 safely. Kinda surprised with 145 results as that's the same I push hard in BO. I got the Rx7 for the BO when nothing else was available, but I like the nice 'push' it gives for cast in the 30/30. I reloaded the cases with 16gr, 5 each, for the next test. Got 100 rnds I need to play with in the lr308, bench practice.
