32 mold recommendation

Have a Smith J frame 32 Long. Looking for recommendation for a ~98-100 grn SWC mold. Intent is to push the ~100 grn to 900-1000(+?) fps from a 3" bbl. Basic idea is to mimic 32 H&R ballistics with the 100 grnr (w/o reaming cylinder to 32 H&R Mag!).

I use an Accurate 31-095W but that is a full wadcutter. It is an outstanding mold. Mine is in brass and is 4 cavity. If you really want a SWC, Accurate offers several around that weight range.
As 300BLK suggested, the RCBS 32-98 SWC is an excellent choice.
I perfer a full wadcutter to get the maximum size flat nose. At 32 S&W Long ranges, I think a full WC is fine.

I'm not sure I would want to minmic 32 H&R Mag velocities in a J-frame, that might be asking for trouble

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I can't speak for your individual Smith 32 Long, but mine is snug enough that the Lee Soup Can shoots better than I can hold. Just lucky I suppose.

I don't know if you can "mimic 32 H+R ballistics" from a 3" 32 Long. In fact, I'd say it's not gonna happen. You can warm the 32 Long up a bit, but you have a J frame with a 3" barrel, there are limits. The Mag has a much, much longer case and unless you put a longer barrel on it, you are again limited as to speeds you are going to get. And a 3" J frame is probably wearing fixed sights? You can only do so much with what ya got.

factory 32 S&W Long is loaded to pretty anemic levels, and if its a steel J frame, it can stand at least 38 Special level loads

The Fouling Shot No. 272 of July-August 2021 is THE definitive issue on "The .32 Popguns" starting on p.6 and continuing to p.11.

Short answer, on p.11 Larry Gibson has pressure tested load data in 10-inch T/C Contender pistol for .32 S&W Long with Lyman 116-grain #311008 in Remington cases with Winchester small pistol primers at 1.257" OAL.

Start: 2.3 grains Bullseye 862 fps at 14,900 psi
Mid: 2.5 grains Bullseye 908 fps at 15,900 psi
Max: 3 grains Bullseye 1028 fps at 20,300 psi.

Start: 2.5 grains Unique 839 fps at 13,600 psi
Mid: 3 grains Unique 951 fps at 16,300 psi
Max. 3.5 grains Unique 1062 fps at 21,400 psi

4-inch revolver velocities can be expected to be about 100 fps less than the 10-inch Contender.

You might want to try a few before you buy the mold. I have 2 different. 32 long Smiths and the both shoot well but with different boolits. The 3" 31 likes 100 to 105 grain boolits. The Accurate 105 rnfp and an Arsenal dewc hit about 1.5" above the front sight at 25 yards.

The 30-1 4" hits high with those bullets but just loves the 72 grain .32 acp bullet. Send me a pm if you would like a few boolits to try.

TC - Thanx. I have a 90 grn SWC (Lee). The old Colt and old Smith (both small frames/circa 'teens/'20s) love it cast fat with a medium load. Also have the heavier SWCs in 118-120 grn (32 L and 32-20). I am really looking for a ~100 grn SWC, and the RCBS looks perfect, as I am a big fan of a 'Keith' style SWC. Can use it in both 32L and 32-20
