327 Fed Magnum is calling me

I miss the days of cases of 30M1 surplus ammo for $15-20 dollars.
And mil-surp ball powders from GI Brass at $2.50/# too. $20 for an 8# jug of 50 BMG fuel.

All of the 30-32 caliber small-case cartridges suffer from an identity crisis. The 30 Carbine and 32/20 HV really aren't enough cartridge to hunt deer with, though I am sure both have taken (and crippled) their share of deer over the years. The 32/20 leverguns I have owned are jackrabbit- and coyote-capable to 150 yards, as was the Marlin Model 62 in 30 Carbine; the Rock-Ola barely held 5" at 100 yards with FMJ bullets, and couldn't manage 3" with the Sierra SPs. It did not join me for hunting, and wasn't around very long. I hope the 327 Federal doesn't wind up exiled to The Land Of Enthusiast Calibers like the 10mm and 41 Magnum.

I had a Marlin 62 for a few years mine was a 256 Wm and actually shot pretty good! IIRC. It was about 1.5-2” with a Sierra 75g and Speer 87. I liked the 75’s cause the 87 poked holes ad didnt expand.
But this isnt that ir a 32-20 or a 30 Carbine. Been there done that. None of those will shoot all the other calibers a 327 revolver can!

This is the 327 Federal magnum. The svelt lil Ruger single six frame with a bisley grip frame is a extreamly comfprtable and good looking firearm to My eye and hand. The SS has a extra round too making it a seven shooter. As mentioned I know its offered in a Blk Hawk as a eight but its amuch larger and heavier. If I wanted that weight and bulk I would carry a 357.

A 327 in a small single shot like a rolling block or Stevens 44 (in modern steels of course) would be a nice rifle.

Im looking again...

Hard to decide between that Bisley and the benefits of a sts gun for outdoor uses. My Single Nine is sts... So leaning for a duplicate.

I picked this up last night.

Needed a bit of work to the ejector. It stuck “out” thru the cylinder with very first use. Shame on Ruger for that one!! Also found some “junk” in trigger return spring. Stoned and fifteen with JB Bore paste had the ejector working as it should.

I stoned the star where each chamber is as two of the seven dosent allow smooth loading or unloading and one down right binds!! Pretty easy fix.

Trigger is nice 4.25# out of the box.

Cyl throats should do best with a 314 and 314’s load smooth and easy. Dropping in and out of each chamber.

The above bullet is a Lyman 311440. It might be my favorite as least in looks it is! Loaded to crimp groove it fits perfectly in this short cylinder. Its about THE shortest 150g bullet one would find its within a heavy 1/16 of a 110g. Using 2400 or Bluedot or Unique Im hoping to find a good load.

The 440 is a favorite here for light "Thumpers" in all 30 cals above 32-20. I have data for 150's in the 32-20 someplace but never got around to trying it. You may be on to something with it in the 327. Reminds me of the 38 S+W/38 Special Super Police loads with 200gr blunt bullets, something always intrigued me there. I'll be interested in how it works out.

Good choice on the BisHawk in blue. That would have been my choice too.

My "Mountain Molds Short Fat Thirty" that I cobbled up (118 grains in 92/6/2) for 32/20 WCF wheelguns) is largely just a shortened Lyman #311440. Its nose form is a complete and shameless plagiarism of 440's schnozzola, just a bit shorter. It has done very well in this role, and in the 30 Carbine Blackhawk--that flat nose puts the THWOCK on varmints most decisively. Nose diameter (.305") is just a mite too fat to fit in 32/20 rifles, though--my Marlin's lands will just take a .303" pin gauge, .304" is no-go. .002" too fat to be a 32/20 WCF bore rider.

150ish stuff out of a 32-20, IIRC, was a 1100 fps MAX type of thing, an I think that was out of a rifle. Still, even at 850-900fps 150grs of 440 is gonna smack the livin' snot outta whatever it runs into. I wonder if the 327 in modern steels will be pretty much the same thing or if it can do a little more? I don't have any data new enough to include things like the 327.

I hope those 150 grainers work out for you in 32/20. Colts have 1-16" twists, S&Ws use 1-18.75", Marlin has 1-20". Most 30/30 rifles use 1-12".

I loaded hp a ladder with 85g XTP’s and Blue Dot last night. Started at 6.5g. (I had the most on hand)

Gonna do similar with the ‘440 after I prep more cases. I finished up and had to scrounge for a ammo box. 38/357 size works well. Didnt even think about that before. So I ordered six boxes last night.

I also found a small box of 130 ish SEC someone sent me. Need to seat them right to the end of the driving band to fit my cyl. But its a good looking bullet. No idea who makes or made it. Need to check PMs for half a doz sites if I want more!! :)

Hopefully I can get to the range Sunday afternoon.

Any idea on the capacity of the 327 case with the 440 seated to your specs? I'm not up on Blue Dot at all. Never even seen a can that I recall.

Suprizingly that 150 because of profile is just 1/16”+ longer than the deep hp 100G Gold Dot!!

Ill get some pics of each side by each.
