350 Legend

Ordered a barrel today.

And all the states that have the 0.357" rule have already said since it shows 357 in the drawings they are allowing them to be used to hunt. Iowa was the first one to say it is GTG.

this is the message that came from the IDNR I posted on another forum.

Even though "to me" the law is silly to start with, it is nice to read that they are being flexible in its interpretation - go hunters!

and the speed with which it was done.

I'm still lobbying to get my model 94 30-30 allowed as a muzzle loader.
as long as I load it from the muzzle it fits every descriptor in the book as far as the rifle goes, and falls in under every caliber law they have written here.
been working on it for 10 years now and all I get is laughter and ridicule or flat out ignored when I broach the subject with the F&G here.

The two glaring issues I see is its a bottle neck case and its over 2” long. Many states require straight wall cases under 2”...

Interesting thread along with a history lesson.
I always find it interesting those that make a lot of laws have little if any knowledge of what they speak of.

I see a fair amount of the 350 legend rifles listed. It’s new and the new may soon wear off. I find it an interesting cartridge, though I’d did think it was just a 223 basic case initially.

A gun I thought and still think it is just crazy silly are the “judge” type revolvers. Yet all of the shops I frequent say they fly off the shelf.

Just for kicks I worked up a 2-ball load for .44 Colt one time, sort of a "Judge" load, using WW alloy because I was a little nervous about logjamming them. Seeing no advantage over a 300-grain WFN at 200 fps more speed, I never bought a Judge.

Geez! Seems like .350 diameter bullet would be pretty clearly ".35 caliber" by any normal definition.

Iowa law stated it had to be a minimum of 0.357". So you were not able to use a 9mm Luger because of this. That was the whole reason everyone flipped out that the bullet was actually a 9mm 0.355". If they followed the law it would not be able to be used.

If some of the states have it listed as a min. of 35 cal then they are probably safe as that means a 0.350"+ can be used. But them states usually have a length and power factor you have to weigh in on the legality.

Didn't the .351 come chambered in a slide action rifle of some sort? I always thought that a light, flat, modern slide action carbine size rifle would be the berries for a lot of applications. I have always thought that pump shotguns and slide action .22s have a lot to recommend them. I know I can get back on target faster with a pump than with a lever, bolt, or even a semi auto. Make it manufacturable with modern CNC equipment, throw in some good features such as interchangeable magazines, swappable barrels, ambidextrous use (bottom eject, reversible safety, etc.) and you might have a winner. The .350 Legend would work good in something like this.

That the long-cylinder "Judge"-type revolvers sell at all surprises me. To read that they fly off the shelves just shows the dark depths of my ignorance concerning "What's Haute" with all of the mall ninjas and 5.11 fan bois. It is definitely time for bed.

Colt had the lightning and USFA made some copies when they were doing the 73 revolvers and such.[my Dad had one in 45 colt and it was flawless like USFA's other stuff,, I hope he still has it]

I bought a Taurus when they come out and kept it for like a week.
it was exactly like everything else I have had from them, it mostly works most of the time if you force things enough.
I dunno whose bright idea it was to make a full chrome plated rifle, but using it outside was the most frustrating thing I have ever attempted.

I found a solution for the 45/410 chamber . :)

I don't know that it was a great solution .
45 cal ACWW Maxi-ball in a 303 case blown straight , LRP , meat tray wads to fill and a Colts sized serving of Unique ....... It just kind of slid over the 4-1 land/grooves with a total groove width of about .150 on a radius 1.416 . It was fun , not terribly accurate but fun .

Got rifle together and shot a few factory rounds. This is the first time in over 15 years I bought factory ammo.

Anyway, I also got my dies in to reload for it. I loaded up a couple dummies to find out what would chamber. Started with 0.358" NOPE! Then moved to 0.357" NOPE! Now I don't have a die to size anything smaller. So I need to get a 0.356" die ordered this week. I am hoping that I don't need to go smaller.

38 Spl Speer plastic shot capsules are the perfect size tho hold either 2 90 gr 32 XTPs, or 3 31ish caliber round balls. You need to leave the base wad out of the capsule to get them to fit, with the bullet base pointing rearwards as usual. You'll want the open end of the capsule to the rear, and the closed end to the front. At about 25-30 yards both bullets impacted perhaps two inches apart. I didn't do it of course, I'd never do this myself :embarrassed:.....

Tomme I think I'd go 355 and work up slowly with it until I have a scuff fit.

I guess the +.003 tolerance isn't and having a box of 357 marked rounds would be about as useless as useless could be.
too many more barrels and that reamer won't even let you chamber 355 bullets.

I ordered some more supplies today. Last night I took a few 0.357" bullets and heated them up and ran them through my 357 sizer. I did this a couple times and got them down to 0.3563" and they are a scuff fit as you say. I could chamber and eject them.

I used a Leed 358-158RF bullet to try this. It fed perfect even at an extremely short OAL. I want to try them once I get my actual 0.356" sizer.

I also picked up a couple of lbs of LIL-Gun. But I really want to load them with 2400 as I have about 12lbs of it. But no data is available for it. I have an idea about where to start with it but not where to end.

So hopefully next week I can shoot this with some of my own. I also ordered 200 pieces of 1x fired brass from Grafs.

Well I started to process some brass today. Not good. All the Federal cases I have from the 180gr Factory loads are junk. You can push the primers in with your finger. And they did not look like they were high pressure before I sized them. Still rounded corners.

And I also got 1x fired Win cases from Grafs. 2oo cases. Over 1/2 have crimped primers. What a pain.

Looks like I may just order some Starline brass. Also casted up about 300 bullets. I got a new Lee 200rf mold. It is a 2 cavity and I was actually impressed how it cast.

Tomme do you think they are slightly over pressuring the round to keep the velocity up?
or maybe it is the throat mismatch with the ammo?

Over pressure. I think. Primers looked good but it had small ejector marks that i just noticed.

I think I may start with 2400. According to a bunch of people the powders are not behaving like what the charts are showing for speed. H110 seems to be the main one that acts faster than it is listed. I have some Imr4227 also.

I do not like ball powders, have run into pressure before I can get any speeds out of them. Lots of people are having the same problem with h110 in this case.
