Anyone here casting for them?

I find so much orphaned range Brass for this caliber I'm considering buying one. Looking at the xdm 5.25".

Loads, bullet designs, & anything else you'd share would be appreciated.

I've only owned one 40 a ruger p-sumtinerother. That was many years ago & I never loaded for it.

I had the gun you are looking at and it shot well.
I had issues with it not having a throat.
Had to run really short rounds to get em to plunk test.
I would just take a peek in the bore and make sure it has a throat or take a loaded round and plunk test it.

It shot great when I figured it out!!

None of the .40s I've shot had much for throats. You can get around it by sizing smaller than you'd normally think is good, but best option is ream it. Brass is murder on lead bullets, it's very hard, very springy, and requires larger than normal expanders to keep case-swage-induced leading from occurring unless you're using very hard bullets.

Lee 175 TC is good, use a stiff rifle lube for hot loads and water drop minimum 20 bhn if going over 1K fps. ACWW and soft lube work well with mild loads IF you have a jumbo expander. DO NOT use a Lee FCD.

Power Pistol is great if you don't mind the blinding muzzle flash. Blue Dot also works if loaded very hot (gums up chamber with lube/unburned powder causing battery issues if pressure is too low). WW231 and Titegroup are excellent for light loads, Universal is clean and functions well but never grouped as well for me as TG, 231, or PP when loaded to their respective optimum velocity/pressures.

been bumping titegroup at 3.5grs under the Magma engineering rnfp made for the 38-40 in mixed brass with good results.
I just seat to the front little drive band and let the round flat nose slide into place in the barrel.

I don't own a 40, but come up with the load cause I have the stuff to make it.
my SIL and both BIL's have a 40 and it shoots well in all of them.
the SIL's Taurus won't shoot anything as well as it shoots the above load.

I run a Lee 401-175 SWC and a 403-175 RNFP by LBT in a box stock XD 40 which has a visible leade cut .

The load data is as follows for the Lee
Winchester brass
CCI small standard pistol primer
Straight WQWW
Darrs lube
5.7 Unique (lot No suggests August of 1968)
Seated @ 1.147 .
It's a 3.25" bbl .
985 fps
Groups run 4" @ 25 yd from more or less a Weaver stance.
These drop at 178 gr.
They had to be hardened and from straight WW rather than the 50/50 WQWW I run in the 9mm , 38/357 because they tumbled but w/o any leading.

The 5.7 gr load is a maximum load by several books.
I used the same load for the LBT but I don't seem to have that chronograph or length data available at hand .
Both are shot as cast at .403 .

The 401-175 was ordered by mistake and is actually intended for the 38-40 I also didn't want the TL but it shoots well enough so I guess it was a good mistake. The LBT came to me as at least the 3rd owner. I didn't try to clean it up, I ran a 150 or so an worked a load .

I shot many thousands of 40 S&W back in the IPSC days. Lyman 401403s over AA#5, enough to make 1000 fps, would shoot sub 2" at 50 yards from my SA P9 with Barsto barrel. I ran across another load that didn't quite make "major" that shot tighter, but I would have to search an old notebook to find that one.

CZ 85,Lee 175,loaded with mild charges of 700x.Pleasant to shoot, minute of coke can @25 yds or so.Still new'ish, meaning I don't shoot it near enough...thinking it absurd to bend over to pick up brass(revolvers are my love).Looking for a 610 Smith.

It's an easy enough to load calibre, you'll have fun.

Thank you all! Very helpful info.

I've found a couple deals on 4.5" xdm pistols however, I think we're going to wait for a good price on the 5.25" model.

I weighed the stash & it appears we have 3500+ serviceable 40 cases clean & begging for lead slugs. That's just from this year!

Would like to work up 2 loads when it comes home. A 150ish gr bullet over titegroup plinker for the orphaned brass and, a 170-200gr full power load capable of taking deer at 15-20yds. Handgun must make 500ft lb here to be legal on deer & that doesn't seem to hard with a 40.

If anyone has un-needed molds4-6cav, pushthroughs (lee&star), & dies I may be interested in getting them early. Any additional info is always welcomed.

I was an early subscriber to 40 S&W, and 95% of my loading involves a "duplicator" for my shop's carry load--the 180 grain Ranger STX, now known as the Winchester White Box 180 grain JHP. This load gives about 925-935 FPS in the Glock 23, and 950-960 FPS in the Glock 22 and CZ-75B. My load uses W-W brass, WSP primers, and 4.7 grains of WW-231 powder. I seat the Lee 175 TC (conventional groove, 92/6/2 alloy, .401" sizing, 50/50 BW/Alox lube) to have about .020" of front drive band extend above the case mouth edge, then give a slight taper crimp in a discrete step. This ".020" above case mouth" formula works VERY well for me with all of the Lee TC autopistol bullets--9mm, 40/10mm, and 45 ACP.

I am shooting the Lee 175 with power pistol in a Smith and Walther 99 and a Kahr CM 40. The Kahr prefers bullets sized .401" and the Smith .402". I have almost gone solely to the 145 gr Lee for Kahr loads to tell them apart as the CM will not reliably chamber .402" loads. Both shoot as well as I expected the smaller Kahr much better than expected.

I handled a keltec sub 2k today in 40. Don't have plans to grab one of those but, found it interesting.
That would make a neat little companion to a glock 40 but, they tend to point upward with my natural grip. Found a couple deals on more 4.5" xdm but, still holding out for the 5.25" at bargain pricing. No rush on this one.
