Ai scammers

I posted this on another forum and copied/pasted it here rather than type it out again.

My brother called to ask if I'd heard from Tony, a mutual friend. He said Tony called from a Texas number saying he was in an accident and on the verge of crying. Tony's phone number is from Alaska. Tony just called me to fill me in. No accident, everything is ok. Evidently someone had accessed one or both of their phones and is using ai to recreate Tony's voice. They had to have infected one of their phones to get a contact number for my brother. When the Texas number was called back it didn't answer. That number was probably spoofed. Be careful if someone you know calls for help.

yeah, but that's not artificial intelligence. That's just scammers utilizing tools to duplicate a voice as part of an old scam.
Not all tech is AI.
It has become trendy to label all tech as AI but a PERSON using a computer is not AI.

A decade ago, the scam was they were somewhere in Europe and had lost their wallet, passport and hotel reservations. I'd tell them I worked in Global Collaboration and knew the scenario. I'd reply I knew how to help in the scenario, my sending money would only delay the process getting it exchanged since my credit union would take at least 36 hours. Then I'd tell them to go to the British or Canadian Embassy for help since the embassy was so screwed up they'd never get help for three days.

I may well be wrong on the ai part. I figured that was how they could duplicate voices. Thank you for straightening me out.
