Any Savage 340 fans?

I picked up a bunch if "junk" last week...

In there I found a half doz bags of gun pieces parts. Under a couple tight fitting boxes in boxes I found a 340 receiver and bolt. No other parts. Then in a cardboard tube a 1" x24" bbl. looks to be a hornet and it fits the receiver thread. There was a 340 recoil shoulder in bottom of the tube.
Parts all appear to be a Remington auto rifle. Someone musta disassembled. I see complete fire control and magazine. Nothing else that looks like 340 parts. But I do have a moldy paint spattered factory stock.

Good find. Numrich has a lot of parts for the 340 in the various calibers. You can probably complete the rifle. I’m a big fan of the 340 series. Ugly but tough and reasonably accurate. I have two; a Montgomery Ward marketed .30/30 that someone restocked with a full length mannlicher style stock. The other came disassembled in a coffee can. Everything was there but the barrel, stock, trigger guard and magazine. I determined the rifle had been a .30/30 and located a barrel at a gun show. Still looking for a stock.
Magazines are widely available. Kinda fun like a scavenger hunt.

there's a couple more of us that have 340's here too.
I have a 340 and a 325 in 30-30 and have almost caved in on buying another 340 from time to time.

I have quite a few 325 and 340 Stevens/Savages. Most are in 30-30, but I have one in .222, one in .225, and a couple of parts guns in .22 Hornet.
Are you looking to sell the parts? If not, and you're looking for a magazine, they do come up on GunBroker fairly often.

Hearing the words Savage 340 always brings back fond memories of my first centerfire rifle I bought with money I made working during a summer when I was a teenager out of school on the farms around town. It was a Sav. 340 in 22 Hornet, it's also the first rifle cartridge I started reloading for and I enjoyed shooting it for many years till it was stolen off the truck coming back for having a repair made, I've always been skeptical of that actually happening but insurance paid me more than I paid for the rifle to begin with but still it was my pride and joy and a tack driver to boot with my handloads. I made some incredible long range shots with that rifle on some groundhogs that the guys still talk about today when were get to talking about old times. I miss that rifle even to this day.

I have a 340/30-30 and a 840/30-30. If another one presents its self to me I'll have it also. Shooting buddy has a 325 no scope. Both of mine have factory scope mounts. Easy carrying guns in the woods. Only problem with the factory mounts is newer scopes turrent housing is too wide. Mine are wearing some of dads old k weavers. Kinda of dark compared to new Nikon's. If I could get new glass on the 340 that would be my with me more than it is now.

My introduction was pretty close to yours. My father took me to "Overland Pawn" in Boise. I had been invited to go hunting with him and one of his friends, but had no firearm. Dad asked the man behind the counter if they had something that was suitable for me, at a price that I could afford (Dad wasn't a gun guy or hunter, so he was totally out of his element). The salesman handed him a rifle, said "this will be a good one for him - $65", and I paid the man and then bought some ammo. 30-30 Winchester.
I took the rifle hunting several times that year. Once with my Dad and his friend, and then several times with my best friend and his Dad. I shot my first deer that year - a nice big 4x4 Mulie - with that rifle. But I never got another with it.
Pawned it several years later. My kids were little and we needed money - never got it back.
Fast forward to 15 years ago, and I wanted to have that rifle back, or one just like it, but I didn't remember what it was exactly. It took a while but I finally figured out that it was a Savage model 340. Mostly because of the Dockendorff rear sight that fell off during one memorable hunting trip!
Since then, I have acquired more than my share of Savage 340's and Stevens 325's - but don't tell my wife!!

I also like the 340's. The only problem they have is the short opening in the receiver. Most of my bullets had to be seated deeper than for my other 30/30's

Well I looked closer tonight. The barrel is 1" & 26.5" long. It is indeed 22 hornet. Its set up NOT to use the barrel nut and threads directly into frame. BUT its kinda unique and RF like, seems the bbl is convex @ about 115 degrees. So HEad Space is crude and WO/ marks indexing is pretty easy. Its excessive as it sits. This is good cause removing material is way to go. :9:
Bad part. I do NOT have a complete bolt. No FP, spring or sear/retainer. Also detent in bold is gone. The receiver is missing yhe ejector & spring. I did find the screw for it as well as the mag latch.

With this size bbl its gonna be a range toy. So Im considering making it a single shot. This would save nearly 200$ in parts. (Hornet mags for 340 are costly)

Factory stock could be made to work. But would need heavy mods. Im considering selling. (Its walnut) I can fit something more appropriate pretty easy. Ill also use a conventional trigger guard. As target gun a safety isnt needed. Just Remove bolt, hand the gun is made safe.:4::42:
I like & load hornet. I have a new supply of hornet bullets & about 400 brand new nickle casez!!

i will need trigger parts. Ebay has a few sets I just need to research to see if all 340's where same. Mine is a B. Where all B hornets like the 23 series or was it a generational suffix???

That site was a big help when I was having feeding and ejection problems with a non-serial numbered .30-30 340. Bought some parts, fiddled round with it, but neither the gun store owner nor I could remedy it completely, so he took it back and refunded my $199.
I wasn't able to shoot it much, but I was impressed with its accuracy. I'd be very tempted to buy another, in any caliber.

The 325C 30-30 I have is horrible . I haven't found a load yet that it won't shoot well . Boring !!!

The 222 340C same thing ......

Good find .

There were some changes but I don't know that they changed the mechanics and relationships . IE the bolt needs to have the correct F pin , retainer cap for the bolt body but the early bolts and middle bolts work and the middle and late bolts work but the early and late won't but I don't remember exactly .

I surely ain't no 340 expert, and I don't know if my little bit of experience will help you or not?
But here goes...
I owned two mod 340.
One was a 340D in 222 and a 340E in 223.

The 222 had a heavy crunky trigger.
The 223 had a real nice smooth trigger.

I swapped the trigger/sear parts between the two, they both functioned, but the trigger didn't have correct placement in the trigger guard, one was way forward and the other was way rearward. the one that was forward, was far enough forward I couldn't comfortably get my finger in there.

So I would guess, that triggers in the 340 are "probably" not very interchangeable.
