not my favorite mold.
it has done okay-ish in one 30-30 on top of unknown date [suspected ww-II surplus] 4831.
and my 03A3 likes it.
I only keep the mold because the 03A3 shoots it so well.
I got 3 other molds that do better in the 30-30.
I have seen it shoot pretty good in places it shouldn't and fail in places it should.
shrug..
Ideal introduced this one in 1906, the first 30 WCF bullet that had a gas check. The nose design was suppose to be created to Harry Pope's 32/40 hunting design. Like fiver, it has been hit and miss for me also. Works great in a 30/30 Handi-Rifle, fair in a Savage 99 30/30. When cast soft, it has a good reputation for killing deer, but haven't done it myself.
Had one years ago while I still had a Win 94 30-30. Took several whitetails with it in fairly impressive fashion. It went down the road not long after that HEAVY trigger Win 94 Ranger did.
Actually, the mould is Lee's six-cavity group buy labeled 311-41, (after the original Ideal number?). Gave the mould to my son-in-law, to see if his Remington 721 likes it.
I bought my Lyman #311041 c. 2011, it casts well with 92/6/2 and falls out about .3115". It shoots neck-and-neck with Lyman #311291 group-wise in my Win 94, I haven't tried it in my Marlin 336/Ballard rifling yet. I have not run the "041" much past 1800 FPS in the 94, and I hit a coyote with a soft-pointed "041" at 115 yards for a BANG/flop a few years ago. It can stay.
