Arsenal 313-115-RF in the 30/30

Spindrift described what I did with the x39 that kept getting shorter rim to shoulder. In the case of a 30-30 I'd neck it up to 32 special then size until I could just get it closed leaving a narrow shoulder step on the neck .

Being specifically a 30-30 I would think the 303 O ring trick would work also .

I have 2 30-30s to load for now and I can assure the brass coming out of them barely resembles a factory case . So far the 308 die as a neck sizer is working out .

protruding primer really a problem?
Not really. Think of it as a 2 cylinder engine. One for the primer and one for the bullet. Primer goes off and the primer/piston moves until it is stopped by bolt head. Powder goes off and pushes bullet/piston out the barrel but also the case moves back and reseats the primer - on higher pressure loads. You see the flattened primer on lots of range pick-up brass of most any caliber because there is some HS wiggle room. If the primer is out more than a few (10?) thous, HS is way off.

I am getting an education regarding head spacing and rimmed casings vs head spacing off the shoulder with my .357 Herrett. Apparently from everything I've read and what I was shown by my Herrett mentor, in order to retain some semblance of case life one must set your dies to head space HARD on the shoulder, such as it is.

I thought with a nice rim to handle such chores I would have no problems with case life and the relatively puny shoulder the Herrett has. However I have been cautioned to be very careful not to move the shoulder back or case life will suffer greatly. Charley even made me a .025" washer to place under my FL sizing die for subsequent sizing after initial case forming.

By the way for anyone interested, I set up the chronograph recently and sent several .357 Herretts through the screens. My 215 grain bullets with 10.3 grains of Unique registered 1,240 fps and were very uniform. I was quite happy with that as the trajectory, recoil, and steel knocking power seem to be a nice balance.
