Arthritis help for gray haired shooters - NOT SPAM

I posted this in reply to another thread about HP moulds and realized I should have posted this in the general discussion area. I'm posting it here and will go back and remove it from that thread. Below is the quote that instigated me sharing this with the group.

I like the MP molds too, but I can’t cast with them for very long before the arthritis in my fingers objects.

I know that this is totally off topic, but I'm posting it because I suspect that Elkins is not the only member here with arthritis in his hands. I have it bad in both of my thumbs. It is commonly called skier's thumb or gamekeeper's thumb. Pain was so severe that I could hardly hold a cup of coffee. I could not snap my fingers and cleaning small parts was torture. A friend in VA told me that if it were not for this product, he would not be walking. His back is full of arthritis. I'd tried several different types of Glucosamine over the years with zero change. But this one worked. It is a Glucosamine Chondroitin product sold by Puritans Pride. It contains MSM which is another compound that helps with arthritis. I read an article a while ago about James Coburn who was riddled with arthritis and he was one of the early pioneers in trying MSM. This was after I experienced relief from the product.

They sell several types and the one I am using is:

Triple Strength Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM Joint Soother®

If you want to go directly to the Puritan's Pride website, and find it that way, the item number is 23413.

It takes about 2 to 3 months of daily use before it has a noticeable effect. It is not like taking a pain-killer. I actually did not notice any gradual change. Then one day I realized that my thumbs did not ache any longer. They are not 100% pain free, but I'd say they are 90% better. Wife went thru this a year or so ago and she started using it with the same results, no more pain!

For all I know, the stuff is also helping me in other areas with arthritis. I crashed my bike at Poconos Int'l. back in 2007 and x-rays showed my spine was full of spurs from arthritis. I left the track after that. My Dad had arthritis in his spine and the man could barely move. Only comfortable position for him was leaning on the kitchen counter. I go to the gym 3 times a week, but exercise every morning at home after getting out of the shower. I still ride bikes and flog them pretty hard in Moto Giro events at least twice a year. I can put my knuckles on the floor and do just about anything I want to do. Staying fit plays a role, but I tend to believe that the stuff is also helping with pain relief.

I'm not affiliated in any way with the company nor the product. I'm a 67 year old retired power generation engineer. I tend to believe that most supplements sold on the market are BS. But THIS STUFF WORKS! I take 2 caplets every day, religiously.

If I have broken any site rules by sharing this, my apologies. But I thought that given the amount of gray hair in the shooting world, it was worthwhile to share with the group.

Pretty much any drugstore will have glucosamine/chondroitin with MSM. I spend all day looking at the stuff.

I've been taking glucosamine & condroitin supplement for years. My knee is still shot,
but probably lasted longer than it would have. I don'tknow about the MSM part, never
heard of that.

I also have used various glucosamine & condroitin supplements daily since an incident in 1997. I believe it helps.
Most arthritis pain is due to inflammation. There are many foods and food additives that are known anti-inflammatory agents.
I try to seek those out and work them into my diet. I generously use spices that are known anti-inflammatory agents. One in particular is turmeric, which is the "yellow" spice that is in most Curry spice blends.

Jon, tumeric is supposed to be a good one. Do you out any faith in the patent mixtures that are supposed to be "more absorbable"? I forget the brand name but it's well known.

My wife's Rheumatologist told her that glucosamine doesn't help rheumatoid arthritis, but does appear to help osteoarthritis, and he has both of his parents using it. No big money for big companies, so no expensive clinical trials.

I just use the spice and get a kick out of eating yellow food, LOL.
I'm not sure what to think about the supplement mixtures that claim being more absorbable?

Glucosamine chondroitin did nothing for me. I suffered for 20 years with knee pain, till I had them replaced. If you need replacements, get them while you're still relatively young and healthy. Recovery is much easier.

Dad waited until he was hobbled to have his done . It took 2 yr to get back going and he never really recovered .

My mother never did recover. She was 78 and they didn't do a bone density, beforehand. The bone cracked the above the joint, right after surgery. Took three months for that to heal, then the bone below the joint cracked. Then it is assisted living for another three months. This was in Detroit from a highly recommended surgeon.

Well, I tried a lot of glucosamine products with zero relief. I pretty much had given up on it working. It was not until my friend suggested the brand I mentioned. It definitely worked for me and the wife. And she is a bit of a complainer when it comes to pain and she's not made a peep since it kicked in.

I would not expect it to solve a problem that requires surgery or a joint replacement. It's not magical. But if you have osteoarthritis, which is pretty common once gray hair sets in, it's worth a shot. I was just sharing because I remember how debilitating it was for me.

Several of my neighbors swear by DMSO, which is Dimethyl sulfoxide. It's a solvent by product made from wood processing that gets used on horses a lot to help carry topical remedies into the skin. One guy says it's the only thing that works for him. I tried it with no joy far as I could tell, but it goes to show how different people respond to different things. Some of our Amish neighbors swear by Absorbine horse liniment. Haven't tried that yet!

Unfortunately, since big pharm sees these remedies as competition, the big money that could go into research just is not there. And it does not help that there are more than a few hucksters selling do-nothing remedies that reflect badly on the outfits selling things that work. It boils down to you having to do your own research and try different things to find what works for you. As I mentioned, I had given up on Glucosamine until my friend recommended what he was using.

Chiropractors tend to fall into this same situation. There are some great chiros out there. But there are also a lot of what I consider quacks. The NY School of Chiro spends more time teaching the students how to run their practice and make money than actual treatment techniques. I have gone to some quacks in my search for a good one. I had one who I thought broke my back one day. But when you do find a good one, they are worth their weight in gold.

Actually some of what hurts research is that these are supplements, not drugs.
A supplement doesn’t need the level of testing partly because it doesn’t need to be shown to actually treat any disease.
That testing is time consuming and expensive.
The FDA has tried to crack down on the supplement industry which has gotten us the notices on packages that they are not for the diagnosis or treatment of any specific disease.
