Belleville was a mining camp/town near here in the Holcomb Valley just north of Big Bear Lake. It sprung up c. 1860 after the discovery of gold by Billy Holcomb. It almost became the county seat of San Bernardino County, since it was larger than San Bernardino by 1861 with 5,000 residents. The gold strike played out by mid-1862, and the town became a haven for Secessionist sympathizers--of which there were MANY in the southern third of the state.
