Benchrest target explanation request

Can someone please explain the BR target to me. Specifically, what is the purpose of the square at the top of the Bullseye? I asked some that I thought would know but got what I thought were BS answers. Nothing in the BR rulebook mentions the target design.
Thanks.

you shoot at the target and the holes go in the square.
this way your crosshairs aren't influenced by a hole being a bit off center in the bulls eye.

JW I'm cheap and shoot both the square and the circle [shrug] so it's probably your way...LOL.
but I do use those targets because you get so many on one paper.

So, the sights are adjusted such that you sight on the square and the impact is the center of the bullseye. This would explain the x and y axis I have seen on some of the squares.
Thanks.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Some folks (me anyway) used to find it easier to use one bottom corner of the square to "sit" the junction of the cross hairs in. The bullets were supposed to land in the bull.

fiver....I hear you! Sooner or later when my studio sells and I become fully retired ( man without a country) I will not have the luxury of my business printer to make free targets!
However if you remember You inspired me to make up this version which is my favorite! Lock the cross hairs in on the X Y axis and Center!
I like to apply a coat of Yellow Highlighter to the central circle in the square also!

yep.
I like to have somewhere to fit the cross hairs so I don't roll the scope back and forth.
I got enough trouble, anything I can do to help myself out is time well spent.

Put a level on your scope to keep it level.

Spoke to another shooting buddy about that target. That target is not for score. It's for group size. The square gives you multiple pinpoints to sight on for condition corrections. Seems obvious now that I know.
