Bullet sizer for AR 308 Winchester

That's the same bullet/mould that I tried in my AR. Feeds just fine. Finding a consistent load/powder combination is another story. :sigh:

I had much better results with lighter, for caliber, bullets.

Thank you...here are the loaded tester rounds I'm going with. Bullet seated to the upper part of the crimp groove, COL is 2.7500"
I am trying these with CFE223 powder not the upper end of the loading spectrum...I'm going to give them a shot! Pun intended! :headscratch:

Functioning is the most important in a semi-auto, but I feel that includes tuning the system to your load. So the other thing to consider that both Ian and I did in our 308 AR's was use of an adjustable gas block as our rifles come pretty much over-gassed from the factory. If you look in my thread, post #2, you can see the adjustable gas block we have:
link to my 308 AR build

It is hard to figure out on your own since you need to see where the cases are being ejected, so it helps if somebody is there in the range to let you know. You can use this image to guide you:

Good luck. Keep us posted :)

Winelover, What powders did you work with?

Powders ranked from fast to slow:

IMR 4198
H 4895
N-135
AA 2495
AA4064
RL-15
N-140
Varget
IMR-4320
N-150
AA 4350

The slowest two (N-150 and AA 4350) gave the best groups.

Managed 1 7/8" MOA, for 5 shots with 27 grains of N-150, CCI LR, LC-08 brass and the NOE 200 (311365) Spitzer (heat treated alloy + CR lube). Twenty nine grains, opened the group up to 2 1/4" C-C.

With AA 4350, 36.5 grains, CCI Mag LR primer, LC-05 brass, put ten shots in 2 1/8" at 100 yards. Also, heat treated alloy lubed with Carnuba Red. Took this combination up to 40 grains (1978 FPS, ES 101.5, SD 35.6) but obtained shotgun patterns. Also have targets using water dropped WW's, as well as, air cooled. Thirty five grains of AA 4350, CCI 200's, yielded 3/4" MOA for five shots with air cooled, but brass was very sooty. Water dropped, didn't do nearly as well.............. and was using LBT lube, rather than Carnuba Red.

BTW, I have my own backyard range with shooting bench about 20 yards from my reloading bench. Very convenient for doing ladder loads. Lab Radar was used for velocities, listed. I have a loose-leaf binder, almost three inches thick of saved targets, just for my AR-10..........

I aspire to have that same option one day!

Keep plugging away, with that in mind, saving all your pennies.

Hope it works out for you.

Once the boys are all done with college and established in a few years, we'll be moving to a more friendlier locale for backyard shooting.

What is your alloy? How much base is below the shoulder? Never could get varget to shoot cast good in either of my LR308 uppers (1:10). Early on I found 4% Sb H.T.d only worked. That sharp SP isn't needed and will probably get bent loading in the AR - not chamber but mag.
I just sized 310, never experimented much. Will - ever shoot that stuff I sent you? Oh, from a long time ago, off the bags @ 100. 2400 fps carbine load.

Obviously, you never met a Armalite. Only SP will navigate the feed ramp.............and I tried many styles. Rick as 30+ thirty caliber moulds. Bent loading the mag???????????

Yup. Bolt tends to pull cases in the mag forward till the tip hits. Just flatten it so a 1/10" or so meplat. Amax even has this problem. More rnds in the mag, gets worse.

M-14 has the same problem withthe entire cartridge column slamming the front wall of the magazine under recoil and the bolt friction ramming the top 2-3 into it as well. Mine has the same feeding problem that John's Armalite has, but my LR-308 will feed empty cases and Ranch Dog wfn bullets.
