And then they go and do something so incredibly....doh.

Got a huge family affair later this week.I'm sorta interested, but going along with the crowd.

So texting "duck boy" (#3) to see how things are working on his end.And his text back is...."what are you thinking?hunting"

No,DAss..we're partying at your place...what food do I need to bring?

The boy is flat out incorrigible

I don't know it sounds to me like his priorities are in perfect order .

From 28-38 my answer to almost every weekend offer from Columbus day weekend until late January was " nope going hunting with the kids."

Yup,can not think of anything better than hunting with the "young'ins".

But,how do we "get there"?

Got any good stories, hunting with your kids?Would love to hear them.

Mine are a mix of stupid smart kids getting raised by ....then,come to realize that hunting is in fact, the coolest thing "ever".

Mine seem to have lost the fire somewhere around 17 .

My oldest girl was a duck hunting fool until her Sr yr of High school . She had a knack however of only shooting restricted species .
We went out to an old haunt on what turned out to be a duck day supreme . We had shot 5 green heads and a couple of gadwall and were headed for the truck ,in a getting heavier and colder fog that was maybe 15 ft off the ground so you could a half mile straight out but at 40 yd there were no tree tops , and this swarm of green wing teal come by us in the typical whoosh way that they do . I guess they were trying to get above the fog and trees . So I say to her be ready there will be more bir.......
I didn't even get it all out and she was mounted an swinging, bam,s H U k it y shuck, bam ,thud, splash...... A pair of canvas backs . 1sawed of at the neck base and 1 with about 25 hits and 80 broken bones . I'm just glad the the headless quacker didn't set his wings they were doing about 60 , he'd have hit about 150 yds out . It was a beautiful double , the dog worked just like she was supposed to.

The youngest boy went with me and the 2 oldest we had about 80 snow deks out on the beach all around the blinds , all 4 honkers set on the edge right , and about 40 ducks on the left set in double row "J" . Kind of a shallow point near the river mouth on Walker Lake . We look out and there's a flight that we assumed were snows but only about 25 birds . I get on the call and they just locked up and straight down the chute ............ Black feet and no tips ..... I'm all "SWANS!!!!!!" Probably about 67x and just in time as lil' miss Canvas back was already shouldered . I start to wave them off and catch just a glimpse of about 80 ducks breaking out of the river channel . I got on the duck call.......... Honker calls are busting out of both side ...... Sure enough there's a flight of honkers about 2 miles out . By any standard this is weird at best . With 3 calls going ,all playing different tunes , the swans set in about 20 yd past the Honker deks half the flight of ducks are right on us and I open up on the ducks with the youngest boy . We got 2 down and tucked back in and got on the Honker calls and the swans although startled just swam down the bank a ways . By some miracle the honkers found the deks and made a big wide circle dropping 4-5 of the 20 or so out . I figured why not their young and tender and limited tagets means more hits right ? I call it the oldest boy dropped 2 clouds in the next county , Ms Canvas drops the only cackler for 100 miles and the youngest is next to me click ,shuck,click,shuck,click,shuck.......
The dog knows that somebody shot and is on the birds ,Ms Canvas is doing her happy dance , the oldest is head hung and I'm looking at the youngest boy and he looks like Don Knott's in the shakiest gun in the west when his 60 Colts falls all apart. He's got the duck fever and the shakes huffing like a freight train and all I can do is laugh . He was juiced up past speech . I guess he just wasn't a wait for it ,sneak up on em' type. Glory days !
In the rush of the ducks, he had shot 3 and forgotten to reload .
I miss it but the kids are grown and have kids too young to go , so pretty soon I'll have grands to take if I can get them in the same state with me.

Girls hunting has to be one of the altime coolest thing ever! Thanks for the story, was right there with ya'll.

Heading to a bachelor party tonight for one of our boys.We all got together and got him reloading equip.Mint 1967 RCBS Rockchucker, very early uniflow with clear hopper and aluminum cap, matching stand, oldish 505 scale, etc.Took several months finding it all on epay.Had a hard time not giving it to him already, haha.

"Think" we're doing seafood on the grill if Duck boy (we're all showing up at his place)can get his entertaining act together.Prolly be 20 folks there....we'll see?

ROTFLMAO!!!! Sounds like my family! 5 boys! Holidays the hunting is way more important than anything else we do! Usually ducks! It is a GREAT time to just get everyone in the ass freezing water, make fun of the idiots that haven't checked for leaky waders! and generally good naturedly harrass each other, then come home and crash out on the couch! And I ALSO number them! MUCH easier than trying to get all the names right - ESPEC when you are mad at one of them!

Oscar,#3 is Duck boy.Generally we as a family aren't Duck guys because they are pretty hard to hit with our hopped up recurve bows. Not impossible,I modified a cheapchit clays thrower to launch....sheet rock mud bucket lids. And will lay bets down on hits with our bows.

But Ducks?Naw,that's where #3 found his purpose.Heck,he's got the money and time.Loves it.We're all behind him,we just come from a different place, hunting wise,if that makes sense?

As for entertainment,specifically food...

He only gets a passing grade. His wife made him get rid of the C.I. (cast iron) pans cause they might scratch the stove top? You've got to be kidding ?.So,he grilled barnyard buzzard and I was the sous chef...brand new SS "fancy" cook pans, cause I flat out refuse to cook on "coated" ( Teflon nonsense) pans.I did blackened shrimp as an appetizer cause there were, late as usual participants.

Other than their backwards pans, the party was good.VERY limited alcohol, which was proper.

ITS - good news is, you are all together as a family! same here. As a habit we have tried to do a family dinner every Sunday. Doesn't always happen, or always everybody, but a better than average most weeks! And my boys (18-31) came into ducks late. I was never really a duck guy, and not now. But oldest got into it hard, then the next 3 brothers. youngest has been but not a big hunter period. But we all have fun, and together! what counts the most!

Yes Oscar, and I know you feel the same...

We are a TIGHT family.

We have 4 boys of our own but wifey and I laid down strict rules that if there was EVER any kids needing shelter,no questions asked, that we'd consider it an affront if our sons didn't "bring'm" home.

As such,we had/have 1/2 dz boys who for various reasons, found themselves in need of help, come live here at our estate (bite me)...

God has blessed us with each and every one of these young men. They are my boys.

Yet to pick up strays, but have certainly helped a lot of them with gun safety, hunting, advice around school, the Army, etc. We look at it basically the same. And a number of the boys' buddies still stop by and stay in touch. Wouldn't have it any other way

Enjoying Sunday morning fresh ground coffee,a Denver omelet,Capstick(Death in the Long Grass),and WSJonline...I guess a short note on"The Wedding" is appropriate.

Through Duck boy's and my SWMBO's benevolence,#2 son got married up Friday night.150 or so friends and family made the adventure.5:00 wedding in downtown Richmond traffic, under spotted downpours.Seriously? It struck home sitting in traffic,WTHeck were ya'll thinking picking this time &place?

Well, the "place" was Tredeger Iron Works.A must see for civil war buffs and it's importance to forging of American foundry work. That part I get/got.It's literally on the banks of the James river.Overall,it's remarkably impressive.Possibly a few minor details,WRT historic pres. Work...no doubt"early on" in their work.Traffic still sucks.

I volunteered as the DD for my MIL.She's the last of the G-parents on the boys side.I call her "Hollow leg".She may be pushing 90,certainly crazy (in the classic MIL way),but if you keep her fed,the claws pretty much stay sheethed, haha. So,following a tradition of,don't go to a wedding hungry....we were the first to arrive.A 12pc dinner of KFC under the arm of my tweaded English shooting jacket....locked&loaded MIL hanging on to the other. Not feeling a bit underdressed...or "unarmed".Quite the opposite considering the weather?Doh."Just don't let the chicken get wet,I won't eat it if it gets wet" was crazy lady's main concern to which,I completely agree.

One of my "stray" boys has become the Ipso Facto of professional photographers these days. He's so good,it costs major duckets to get his D.A. to even talk about shooting your wedding...he's made me very proud."No photos for you" and it's back to his Grateful Dead existence. So,he's there and as preordained I'm his willing assistant.Being the DD,as such "water only please"....choosing instead the fat induced coma provided by KFC.

I'd say we,or "they" left oh,maybe 15% on the table. No,not the gratuity....think party, stupid scale.Normally we're at the estate or some other D.A.'s house and get rather "worked up" in our celebrations.OK,one party story years ago;Once the cpl unsuspecting vegans left the shindig....we started launching frozen veggie burgers, clays style and betting on hits.Hey they're hard to break.

But,there's a degree of dignity needed at Tredeger....They/we left the place basically as found.
Mr. and Mrs. #2 are honeymooning in Yorktown.Interesting that only a cpl boys made it back home for bowhunting yesterday. They took a doe.I had biz/job to look at so left the hunting in their capable hands.Scuttle butt from party is a bunch are coming next w/end to hunt?Wonder if #2 makes it,haha.

That there ends "that" story.Best,BW
