I came () that close to not being here or being someone completely different that day. About a GGGG Uncle annexed the islands .

Mom's parents and Aunt were all there . Her Dad was an electrician in Civil Service. Her Aunt was an RN with Pan Am and had a triage in her living room. The grands apartment was only a couple of blocks outside of the gates at Pearl .

Most people I come into contact with today would say "what's Vietnam?"

Most don't remember the Gulf War.

THIS is ancient history to so many today who's lives and lifestyles - their very existence and existence in a tolerant society, are a DIRECT result of this event.

And they preach "tolerance" without a clue about this day, let alone its significance.

EDIT: In Ohio, as of today, this day will be memorialized as the day it became legal to smoke weed.

My great Grandmother which I knew as well as an up to 8 yo can , was born under a flag with only 46 stars ...... Maybe fewer ........ She was born in 1888 and at least briefly ,living on a farm in Los Angeles, wasn't all that far from the international that may or may not have been a 34th parallel for Santa Anna . Fortunately McKinley and Roosevelt got that one squared away . Of course that started some feces all over the Pacific after the annex from Spain .

Europeans take great joy in reminding Americans that we are" the spoiled little children" . When presented with that opportunity I remind them that it only took the spoiled little children 3.5 years to settle up 1400 years of border disputes with Germany , France, England,Spain , and Italy . That resolution has lasted longer than any marriage among kings solution ever did . Off course they're still cleaning up UXO in Berlin as full time jobs .

In Luxembourg City's Place d'Armes there is a plaque commemorating the liberation of Luxembourg by Patton's 3rd army. When I read it something got into my eye.
