Will ask someone that knows more than me.
With my wifes condition I get to spend a lot of time watching
the boob tube.
You get to see a lot of commercials of people selling something or
asking for donations
Every time you see someone asking for donations on tv
or they are selling something it is always $19.99 a month.
Is there a threshold above which you have to pay taxes?

EVERY and I mean EVERY commercial asking for money is a scam.

Any interaction will result in your name and contact information becoming public knowledge, and your name will be on every sucker list in the world.

They pay professional bull crap artists to write commercials that will pull at your heart strings.
you won't have time to watch the television, because you'll be answering phone calls all day.
There for I don't bother with worrying about tax of any kind.

Hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I've spent weeks undoing shoe box full of collection papers from these butt wipes.

A lot of small banks will not track scam accounts below $20. These are sucker ads.

The police and banks are so overwhelmed with the big frauds they do not have any time for the little frauds, I hang up on them, ignore and delete the emails, block the sender if they persist, report the emails as "phishing" attempts. The only money I have donated n the last decade was a part of my inheritance from my mother. This was given to Swedish Cancer institute as a token (a small amount) in her name for the work they have done for me.

The only legit ads I know of are Shriners and St Jude. Much of anything else is a pure scam. Doesn't take much thought to figure out that if you contribute to making scammers richer that no, elephants in Africa will not stop dying. Many that try to tug on your heart strings such as the ASPCA to save critters actually spends about 5 cents of each dollar contributed to helping critters, all of the rest is helping only the scammers.

I don't see a lot of commercials or ads for them, but the Salvation Army is legit. Every time we had a serious event they were out there with food and aid, provided shelter and help for stranded folks. I don't see a lot of people getting rich working that gig. They get my money.

the aspca is the largest killer of dogs and such on the planet.
they need to mind their own business most of the time.

I'm still trying to figure out how it costs more to feed a dog than it does a starving kind in Africa, can't the dog eat the same thing that kid can?
how about we ship those dog's to Africa and fix both problems at once?

One of the orgs we donate to is the LOCAL Humane Society. We know the folks in charge, their operation is top notch. We know who does their audits. They’re legit and serve a very useful community function.

We donate to Shriners and St Jude's as well as a few more, but, we send in a check once or twice a year. No donations by Internet. Karyn my partner checks them out first and she's pretty picky.

It has always bothered me that you see all the ads about sending money for the poor kids
in Africa but never for the poor kids in America.
Even the goobermint gets in on the act.
Not trying to be political just the truth!

Jim,
Reading your question a different way:
I think that the $19.99 figure is a psychological one. There is probably a study somewhere that tells these scam artists what the most effective figure is that people will pay without doing any research, or feeling like it's a big deal. That's why it isn't one penny more - $20.
As far as taxes, I don't think most of them are paying any. Charity status you know!

Not hard to figure out, save critters or kids in Africa and then try to see what effect your money made. Other than of course making them rich.

so you're saying the $19 I sent to Greta will not save the Earth?
No, but your self esteem will soar, your heart will glow, and your family and friends will love the new man even more.

My girl friend came from the local Humane Society. An honest no kill pet sanctuary. I would never donate to the national Humane Society though. Local is an entirely different thing, the local chapters get very little from the national organization.

My granddaughter has had type 1 diabetes since she was 12 years old. I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon and I have selected the Juvenile Diabetes Association to receive the donations that Amazon makes.

you need to be real careful about picking out a gal from their bikini team, easy on the eyes for sure, but the ears can sure suffer.
