Gas check interchangeability

I wasn't sure where to post this.

I want a Lyman 266 diameter mold to use for my 6.5 Arisaka and my 6.5 Swede.

My question is I have a bag of gas checks that I think measured .277 on the outside.

Are they too big or will they size down in the lube sizer?

I would think they should size down....to be sure you could anneal them....( I do this with most of my checks)

I cover the top of my hot plate with them, right side up, and put it on high for 15 or 20 minutes and they become dead-soft. They form VERY easily after that. Mine are aluminum. Not sure my method would work with copper.

maybe??? upside down [G/C first] through a push through.
good luck, there's a lot that can go different.

I just measured a Hornady 6,5mm GC, it had an outer diameter of .271.

It might just work, with annealed gas checks. But you’d have to crimp them on base- first.

A really useful tool for (among other things) pushing bullets base- first through push-through sizers, is the NOE top-punch holder for the ram. It is currently out of stock, however.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Annealing is a great idea if you want to try it. Pretty good chance some will come out uneven though. Getting everything centered is going to be a pain. And check the bullets for runout after. You can bend a bullet pretty easy if it's got any length to it vs diameter.

I also just got a 6.5 mold and Ian had sent a few 6.5 gc to me months ago for some other 6.5 cast bullet that where gifted to me to try. There was a few left so I seated them on a few of the new cast. They seemed to work just fine but as Ian pointed out. Close look, they didnt really they shaved lead/pc. I ordered some from Safe Outdoors. (I get most all my checks there) Gator copper. (They offer Hornady style as well as aluminum for most calibers)
These came and they seated nearly perfectly out if a couple hundred cast I think I had 4-6 that where a issue and not even sure I didnt cause that. This is not necessarily ta say Gators are across the board better. But they where here this bullet for me. So options are often really good.

Thanks for that Brad. I figured at this point I'll just buy some the correct size and offer up the other ones to someone on this board.

CW, your spell checker did it again. It’s Sage Outdoors, not Safe Outdoors. ( I had to go back and correct my spell checker to type this post).
