Gas checks for round balls

Or, gas checks for goof balls...

Inspired by a politician claiming that the absence of >one< politician from Texas caused terrible harm during a winter storm, I have decided that we need a gas check for round balls.

Very simple, get a bag of Luballoy copper plated shot [choose size appropriate to your caliber], cut them in half [you will need only half the number of shot to the number of bullets to be cast], place the shot half in the bottom of the round ball mould [make sure the copper side is AWAY from the sprue hole!], cast the top half, and there you go!

My heart felt good wishes go out to those in Texas that got gobsmacked by the recent storm, and then were blind sided by sheer stupidity.

:headscratch:

Yep, I've used them to shoot cast and jacketed bullets. However, I still reverted back to the lowly RB.

I was actually thinking PC RB would be the solution to shooting a bunch of those . The BP guys rushed to the potential of PC balls ....... Then they remembered they needed lube anyway to keep the fouling soft .

Just get a ball bearing and a hunk of wood and use a swing press to make beer can checks.

I have used both poly round ball wads, from the cylindrical one pictured above, to one that is pretty much a disk with hemispherical cups. The short snort doesn't always grip the ball tightly, and the ball can / has rolled down the barrel.

I am not looking for workable solutions, my opening opinion was illustrating absurdity by being absurd.

If someone wants to discuss a viable wad / sabot for a round ball, by all means, do so!

PS. If someone went through the trouble of trying to cut a plated round ball, I don't think the copper plating will consistently fill the grooves. Unless you used a jig to ensure uniform cuts, the diameters of the halves will differ. From the experiences of others, casting hot lead onto the back of the half laying in the nose probably won't lead to a good bond.

But, proove me wrong! I'm sure there's some old-timer, or new wave technophile that has done this...
