Mowing 3D range today.... this is a super tough call from not just a competitive standpoint, but ethics as well. Just sayin,"I'm taking it"20190530_103550_resized.jpg

I was taught to shoot THROUGH the animal to the far-side front shoulder. This is a make-able shot, IOW--and I have threaded such needles a couple times, once each with open irons on a 30/30 and with a scoped 6.5 x 55. 40 yards and 65 yards, respectively. I don't bow-hunt, so I can't assess the odds fully in that venue.

Yup.... on "shooting through".

This is borderline,in poor taste but.... ethics is a curious thing anyway.

Think,MLB....

On the news this a.m. was a little girl getting jacked(hope she makes it!) with a foul ball while sitting just downstream of any netting provided.

Terrible accurance to be sure..... but when you watch the film,notice... not only the batter, but more importantly, the catcher's response. Here's a player that has his face full of protective cage material... yet,at the crack of the bat,he knows it's foul no less... and looks 100',TO HIS LEFT....and see's the impact.

Get past the obvious here(unfortunate injury) and think for a second,as hunters.... how acute his vision is? I'm just sayin, this is a skill build that we can work on.

I've passed on a back end shot with rifle.
Even a gut shot with a bow is nasty.
But, since my bow is not being used any more, I'd go with aim small.

Good call Popper....

What folks that haven't spent time handgun hunting.... trying to be nice here.... "don't get" is,the range of motion available. For instance,in the shot above, for a right handed shooter.... if it was,to your right as we would be looking straightahead, neither a rifle OR a bow is gonna make that shot.

It's too close. For a seasoned and practical handgunner that's a gimme.

I would submit that such a shot is more easily made with a handgun than with either a scoped or iron-sighted rifle. This assumes that the pilot of said handgun can navigate effectively, but most that reside here likely can do so, and on demand.

CZ,I am no doubt bias but..... for almost exactly 10 years the only "firearm" hunting I did was with a revolver..... got down right "prickly" about it too..... it was the whole hunt vs snipe thing.

Still say,if I was limited to one method of hunting,in the wet(raining) and the metric was meat on the table.... give me a 629 in 44 mag. with a well developed 429421 load. From zero to 75 yds.... it's pretty much Mike Tyson, knock your sheet out.

Well cast under 100 yds with say the 358 , 30-30 , 45-70 I'd take the back half of the shoulder or the neck .
Stretch it.out farther and add the 257 Roberts , 25-06' , 264 WM , I'll wait for the step out a little farther , there's too many chances to have the bullet deflect or blow up .
The RBH 45 Colts or Sec 6 357 inside 50 yd yeah I might take the neck if I was feeling really good about it .

It's just too easy to wait for the step whether its that right front forward or the turn to or away .
I shoot a 48# 58" Bear Grizzly with a 405 gr arrow when I shoot one . I still don't like the idea of trying to punch between the bones or through the blade .

If you have to track, are you going to end up on somebody else's property?

Winelover I believe has done some bow hunting on his original 20-something acres. That might be about the smallest piece of ground one would want to bow hunt a deer on. With his new acquisition I'm thinking there is a bit less worry about having to follow a wounded critter onto neighboring property.

Smallish property? brushy? I think I'll stick with "overkill" (pun intended): 45-70 or possibly 348 Winchester.

Original property was 26 acres. Most of my deer were harvested via arrow. At least one, sometimes two per year. All fell on my property and always shorter tracking than those taken with a gun. Longest tracking involved cast bullets (44 Mag in Marlin)..............I don't aim to break the shoulder. Guess that's my bowhunting mindset.

IIRC, I've taken four deer with firearms, since moving to Arkansas. Two of those were with muzzle loaders. ROA was a bang flop. Last seasons 8 point was with 54 caliber round ball in a TC Renegade. It traveled less than 60 yards. The other two, with cast in the Marlin, fell within 10 yards of each other after making @ 200 yards...............right on the very edge of my property. Hardest blood trails to find were also with the Marlin.

Ok. I'd moon walk a few feet, do a pirouette, drop to the splits, bounce up to a perfect shooting position, and double lung it. After all, its just a pollystyrafulgamatic man made target.:rofl:

Shows you how much I know!

While I've hunted small game with bow, bunnies mostly, I've not had the opportunity to take larger game with the bow.

I'm looking forward to taking deer with one of the old Springfield front-stuffers.

Video?
I'd make that into a screen saver GIF, don't know how, but I'd figure it out.

Creosote, I would pay good money to see that move performed.

I have been VERY lucky in the deer woods and fields. I have never had to do much "tracking" of significant distance, nor have I lost a deer I have fired at. (Knocking on wood here, with vigor.) I 'pass' on marginal shots, and longest shot I have taken on a deer was my first one at age 13--125 yards or so. Bang/flop, with a Win 94 in 30/30. The next-farthest was in 2006--about 65 yards off the muzzle, and he went about 30 yards before piling up. (6.5 x 55, 140 NosPart).
