H&R Handi in223

Not having much luck with any of the 223 cast bullets.
Am using the old fashioned favorites Red Dot and Unique.
Was given 2 pounds of H335 to try but have not found a cast bullet load with this powder.
Should I use the H335 starting load for a 55 grain jacketed
Or is that a disaster waiting to happen?
Does anyone have a load for the 55 or60 grain 223 cast using this powder?

I used jacketed H335 data for a couple of different cast bullets in my .223. Works fine if your alloy and fit are up to the job. IIRC those have a 12" ROT, so stay with the lighter bullets.

I have a H&R Handi in .223 also....not a favorite cast bullet rifle for me. Never shoots very consistently. I improved it slightly over stock by filling the Plastic Stock with Lead shot ( added a pound and a 3/4 to the weight....I only shoot from the bench)
Also resting it so the receiver is on the benchrest helped with accuracy I found it actually likes the new Lee 55 grain
& yes Red Dot and Bullseye have been my powders of choice ( I shoot light loads)

HI Dan,
Glad to see you are still around! Been missing your post recently!
Geeze that is making those 22 bullets move too fast for me!;)

you know 4grs of red-dot is still moving a 22 cal bullet out well over 2-K.

Rod let's back up a little and go over stuff a bit better.
what bullet and alloy are you using?
what do you expect from the rifle?

I can tell you what I'm using in my 8 and 9 twist AR's or my Ruger Varmint rig or whatever but the 22's are picky and somewhat sensitive.
the 'what' that I'm using isn't as important as the process of getting to your goals.
the 'how' is probably more of interest.

I've run everything from Titegroup and Bullseye to 4064 in the .223 and haven't found a bad one yet. 2400 will cycle a carbine-gas system at 2K fps and moderate pressure. It all depends on what you want to do.

Deep breath........Ok, this might be a good time for the runfiverun theory and operation dissertation on loading cast for the .223? Let's see if Rodmkr is interested in going that far. I'm still mad that that got lost on the other board and I didn't have sense enough to copy it to my own computer or print it out before poof.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
Little sidetrack here, anyone know if a H&R single shot, wood stock is the same rifle as a Handi? My lgs has a unused in stock, decent price, not that I really need it.:headscratch:

How?.... will get back with you.

The question begs putting things in some sort of order... you gotta love those cases. Velocity rules in short range.... well that, and practice.

Now you have my interest! No way to recover it?

Not unless you can bring Jay Gibson back from the dead and then ask him to un-delete posts on a defunct board from about five or six years ago.

I agree with JW.
Would like to have as much info as possible on the 223 handi rifle.

As an aside question on the handi rifle for anyone that wants to chime in.

Since the forearm is not connected as it is in a standard rifle ( more like a shotgun I guess)
do you think bedding it would help or hurt it's accuracy?
Or is that a complete no-no.

IDK about bedding, just make sure it doesn't bind on the stud and make sure you put your front rest under the receiver or barrel hinge and not on the forend when shooting for groups.

Ben might know about the two, I know he has at least one of them.

man I don't know if I can remember the whole thing, it was like what? 4 or 5 full length posts to start with and added to as I went along.
I know I posted about 60% of it over at the Boolits site, but I figured no one was reading it or cared [especially since nobody had responded to the post or even asked a question] so I quit writing the whole thing out [but that one disappeared too, when all the changes were made there]

anyway it had a lot to do with alloy and design limitations, and throat relationships between a 223 and a 5.56 throat.
I delved into why you'd want to [start with] use a certain alloy/nose diameter and shape with the 5.56's throat versus snuggling up a tapered type shape from a softer alloy in a 223 and then tracking your groups starting with a soft alloy and working ahead watching the group sizes change just from alloy change alone.

I also discussed loading to bare minimum [just enough for the AR rifles] then swapping those loads straight over to a 223 bolt gun and why [most] some things worked and some didn't.

if you guys really want to hear a lot of it i am more than happy to just go through and answer questions and will try to expand on things as I remember more and more.
I know you've all heard some of it from me before because I use some of the same techniques with other rifles at high velocity.

Some times on the CB Forum if I run a certain search sting (even recently) I will get a pages of just text with the title of the thread that are clickable links that take you to an old archived thread! Many are from the early 2000's I guess if I run a search for something and it may have appeared in the older threads it brings up this archive of links.
Problem is to run a correct search string!
I'm wondering it they may be in there
