These are the Pachmayr Compac Professional Grips for a RB K-frame.
They just barely cover the backstrap, which is good for my application, but they don't have enough material on the front strap or bottom.

So close, but not quite ideal for me.

I have a heck of a time getting a purchase on I/J-frame S&Ws. My best option to date has been Pachmayr Compacs, but 'Best' falls a bit short of 'Ideal' so far.

To me, the single-best grip set on a snubgun was the Gen 3 Colt Detective Special. Heck, the revolver itself was 'Best Of Breed'--6 shots, +P capable, and the OEM grips fit my paws like gloves.

The Eagle Secret Service Grips [a blatant copy of Craig Spegel’s Boot Grip design] has proven to be my best compromise between small size and control for the S&W J-frames. Just about everyone and their brother makes some rip-off of Craig’s Boot Grip.

A Tyler T-grip adaptor and the factory S&W grips are a very close second to the Boot Grips in terms of performance while maintaining a small profile.

The Pachmayr Compac grips for the J-Frame are nice grips, but they add some girth to the profile of the gun.

I agree the Detective Special is a very good package in terms of overall size. Again, I turned to the Eagle Secret Service Grip, albeit without checkering. Had to do some surgery with a Dremel and a sanding drum to make clearance for a speedloader but it turned out fine.

Those are the Pachmayr Compac Professional grips, same as the ones in post number 21 above.
I’m not sure that is correct. I believe the Presentation series all have the gold insert emblem on the exterior, even the compact J frame rb grip. Not much difference I can add while at work, but will add more when I get home, where I have examples of each.

Professional and Presentation are two different labels.

Tyler T-Grip is a stop gap measure, so you can still use the factory slim wood grip on J-Frames. Adds a little more control with giving up concealability. None of the rubber Pac's are the ultimate in concealability. IMO.

Grips, I've settled on my three J-frames.

P1030397.JPG

At the one o'clock position. Model 60 SS with Tyler grip adaptor and my handmade micarta grips fashioned after the shrouded rubber grips Bianchi use to offer.

At the 6 o'clock position is Cindy's 642 with First Generation Crimson Trace Laser grips, in a boot grip style. She inherited them because the activation switch is off center and works better for a right handed individual, than a southpaw like me.

At the 11 o'clock position is my 642 with Second Generation Crimson Trace Laser Grips. They moved the activation button to the center of the grip and cushioned it. Now, be aware, CT offers different sizes of their J-Frame grips. Some models are huge. These are the smallest and most concealable. They are hard composite, except for rubber on front and back strap of the grip. They are also slimmer than Pac's...............making them more concealable.

At 9 o'clock is a 357 LCR with CT grips that are about the same size of the ones on my 642. LCR's are almost identical in size with J- Frames. Main difference is the type of grip frame Ruger uses.

The Model 60 was my first J-Frame purchase. I learned that a hammer has no business on a CC piece and all steel belly guns are too heavy to carry all day long. YMMV

I have Pachmayr Presentation Grips on my Python..........they have the gold medallion. I replaced the original wooden grips (still have) because the Pac's are slightly smaller and offer better recoil protection. However, I settled on the discontinued Uncle Mike's rubber grips for my Redhawk, after trying Pac's and Hogues.

The J-frame with the factory grips panels and a Tyler T-grip is a good option to improve the grip without making the overall gun larger.

Any of the “Boot Grip” designs (most stolen from Craig Spegel’s pattern) will accomplish the same goal as the Tyler T-grip adaptor – improve the grip without making the overall gun larger. A lot of the Boot Grip options are actually very good. I’ve been using Eagle Checkered Rosewood Secret Service grips on a DAO J-frame for over 25 years and I’ll never part with them.

As noted earlier, the Pachmayr Compact Professional grips are a tad bit larger all around when compared to the T-grip/factory panel or Boot Grip options. They are nice for shooting but begin to sacrifice in the area of concealment.

Such is life, always a compromise somewhere.
