Had to order a new scope

Well my eyes are getting worse just like everyone elses as we get older. I used to be able to see the center of a 1" target dot with a 3x9 power scope. As my sight got a little worse I had to go up to a 6-20 vortex viper with a fine crosshair to see the center of the dots.

Well I have noticed guns that used to shoot 0.25"-0.5" have now been shooting into 1" on average. I just can't see the center of the dots I use anymore. The dots have a 1/4" dot in the center of them for a fine aim point.

So I got a new 6-24x50 34mm tube scope coming. I am hoping the extra 4x will get me back to shooting smaller groups again. And it has a better finer point of aim than the vortex does so that should help. It is the Arken 6-24x50. They have a really good sale going on right now for them.

I haven't graduated to the 34mm. Just got to 30's a few years back and was amazed. I was (am) a Leupold guy loving the VXII 2x7 but shot a buddies Hawk "fancy scope". WOW WOW then learned its NOT as costly as I expected. I bought one few months later. Very shortly I removed two other scopes and sold them and a couple others I had as spares and bought two more of the same Hawke 30mm caliber specfic optics. Fancy for the cost with etched reticules and as mentioned turrets designed specific for calibers. I had two 22 Mag and one sub 22 LR. Crystal clear and repeatable a d nearly spot on for cross hatches out at range. All for under 300 ea. More clear then my Leupolds and better over all with range of adjustments and all. Over all I still love my Leupolds but it started my affection for the 2/3/4-14x scopes over the 2-7's. Still know and always will be a place for that 2-7 but anything that might see past 200 gets a "better" scope.

Good luck Tom!! Its gonna be a good one!!

Kind of depends what you're shooting at. If hunting ground squirrels at several hundred yards, different from deer hunting.

I personally kind of like a fixed 4x. Seems about right for the deer hunting I do and even on squirrel guns is about right. I don't even think about long range.

Even on targets, my heavy, .30-06 dedicated cast target rifle wears an old Denver Redfield, I think it's a 4-12. Nice scope after ironsight Inc rebuilt it for me. I leave it on 8x, anymore and I son't shoot as well at 100 yards.

Seems like everybody has gone magnification crazy these days, take a nice rifle and stick the hubble telescope on top of it. I also wish someone would still make scopes with a nice, gloss blue finish.

don't you know that the deer are fuzzy in your sights/scope!!! dang deer!!!

i should have stayed a fixed 4x, because every other 3-9x was set at 4x. as the years went by, the deer always seemed fuzzy, so i moved it up to 6x. then one day i was using my Win m94 with Williams FP sights and the deer went fuzzy at about 40-50 yards. the fuzziness saved a really big doe, i couldn't see the deer, so i passed her up. i went to eye doctor and was told i have nearsightedness. i got glasses and i wear them all the time.

dang fuzziness went away!!! lol

since my eyes got old (the rest of me is like a teenager.....yeah, right) i've been a 2-7x fan. since then, i see a 3-9x scope as the Hubble telescope.

I’ve been shooting at squares or crosses for a few years now. I aim at one corner. I nestle the corner of the target into the corner of my cross hairs. I don’t have any fancy scopes, I only own old 4x’s and a few newer 3x9’s.

I don’t really like round dot targets anymore, if I’m using a scope. I prefer shooting at squares. My group sizes seem to improve when aiming at just one corner.

Nice to know that I not the only one that likes the corner of a square, diamonds are nice too.

Scope wise, I have noticed over the last several years that I need to play with the ocular adjustments in order to clear things up, from previous settings. Hadley eye cups are a godsend when it comes to rear tang sights.

Aging eyes. Reading a street map at night using the dome light. Ya right, that does not happen any more, without a bright flashlight, glasses and sometimes a magnifying glass. Sorry, I loathe GPS navigation in a car or on a phone, if it can tell me where I need to go, then someone is watching where I am going, nobody's damn business where I go.

I switched to “corners” a long time ago when I was shooting a lot more 22rf. A large target with a 1” grid pattern gives an awful lot of targets on every page. Just recently printed some pages with 5 round targets per page and like them too so I guess I’m not real picky. After the summer and my eyesight got really bad, I’m just happy to be able to do anything without my eyes hurting and every target looks AWESOME!!!

Scope wise I’ve always liked a lot of magnification and would have 6x24’s on all my ”shooting” rifles if I could afford them. They would be first focal plane too! I guess the only one I wouldn’t power up on is my 300 WSM. It kicks too much to shoot a lot and the 4x12 Leupold on it now makes it a nice sized package to carry with plenty enough magnification for whitetail hnting.

Sorry to tell you this, but if you have any digital telephone, they know where you are within three feet anywhere there is cell service. If your phone is on, you are being tracked every second of the day. GPS has nothing to do with it.

I have glasses and they are a current prescription. As of right now I am not hunting anymore. Most all of my deer hunting is within 50yds. So a 4x is plenty. But I like to shoot at longer ranges at different sizes of targets.

The other night after the 44 pistol problems, we put out a bunch of the old 1lb propane tanks at different ranges out to 800 yds in the corn field. This is what made me want something a little more. I did OK but I would like something a little better than what I have. My little 223 with a 62gr Hornady bthp math did very well. So did the 18" ballistic advantage replacement barrel on my AR with the same ammo. Its nice when several guns shoot the same load equally well.

Next is a new Criterion barrel for the savage bolt gun. That is what the new scope is going to go on. Just have to order the barrel here in a couple of weeks.

Ric, Yep, I knew someone would mention that, I am aware unfortunately. The apps on my phone at a bare minimum, my permissions are turned off. While I cannot completely hid my foot prints I do what can to "tread lightly", that is when I don't leave my phone at home which becoming increasing more frequent. Another friend ours came to a rifle match that wife and I were in, he took few photos of us at the match. More than a year later he sends me an email that google sent him letting him know that some photos he took had 500,000 views. Guess which photos? Anytime some app asks for access to my phone, contacts, gallery, etc., bye bye app.

Speaking of being watched, Need to veiw 2,000 Mules by Dinesh D'Suza. Scary stuff on tracking people.

I have my own personal TB hard drive out there somewhere in a federal basement. I have background checks that go at least as deep as 1921 possibly 1901 . There is no doubt that some tech out there knows more about me than I do.

Buy some of this and wrap your phone in it if you are worried about tracking on your phone. It will block everything if you do this even if the phone says it is off. Your phone is still on when it says it is off. Works really well in your wallet to block your credit cards as well.

Just look up faraday cage and that is what this is doing. Depending on your phone you might need 2 layers. But be aware NO calls can go in or out if your phone is in this.

Sometimes tracking is very useful. My son just prosecuted a case were a young girl was kidnapped and locked in the trunk of the car, but the bad guys kept her phone. Within two hours they had gotten a search warrant, tracked the phone and rescued the girl. FWIW

I have a hawke 4-16x or something like that that I pass around to different rifles to use for load development. It's an excellent scope at a really good price. Hawke has taken the place of vortex for me. I'm still a leupold guy on my hinting rifles. Or on my vintage hunting rifles, a weaver K4 post reticle.

Funny the things that bring back memories.

My grand dad had ooold, saddle worn 99 in 300 Sav, I never new the vintage, another relative told me late 30's, but I have no way to confirm.
The scope on it was a 7/8" K4 with a post and leather lace up recoil pad. That rifle had likely taken more deer and elk than many men have even seen. After he passed in 86 all the vultures swoomed in, even the with stuff he had personally given away years before his passing there were arguments over. No sense loosing sleep over it.

This all makes me think Unertl never should have went out of business. Seems like they could build unlimited diameter scopes and almost unlimited MOA adjustment. With just a parallax adjustment, the scopes would be ruggeder and less prone to failure.

Corners, diamonds, heck, even the six o’clock hold has helped me out more than once. I like the six o’clock because I set the sights so the bullets land in the bullseye.

Each to his own.
