Hunting with HP's

I have a gorgeous Walt Meladner cut NEI 331-245 RN for the 8x56R. I've considered HPing it. In the meantime I'm experimenting with turning it into a FN with a simple jig and file. Wonderfully accurate little rifle, about the best off the shelf milsurp hungting rifle I've seen. If I get time to play with it more I'll let the results be known.

Bret - I am all ears on the Steyr 95! Have a pair! shooting the Lee mold that drops 215. Could file it flat and get prob 200-205. Curious what your load data is. Jut getting mine set up for reloads. Would love to carry it into the deep woods where I hunt (think 30-30/handgun territory!) and take a deer with it. It would be very easy to carry (think Win 94)!

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I used Buckshots advice to start with 8x57 data and work up from there. Using medium traditional burners like 4064, 4895, 3031 starting in the 40-41 gr area seems prudent. I don't have my data in front of me, but it seems like I was in the 42/4064 area when I last played with it. For charging rocks or scary paper targets, 16/2400 is a nice plinking load. I tend to think of this round as a 33 or 348 Winchester in a bolt gun. I haven't done a recent search for data, but that's where I'd start. That case is not like much else around, more like a straight wall than a bottleneck in some ways. It can use slightly faster powders than you might think. My bullet is almost 20% heavier than Lees, so I'm in a different ball game. I did recently look at NOEs website (IIRC) and he offers a FN 230-240 gr GC design that looks like just what 'm aiming for. Mine is a well tapered RN and while I'm sure I could bust both shoulders on pretty much anything in the lower 48 with a 240 at 2-2.3K, I have a great deal of trust based on experience using a major FN cast design in any caliber I've tried it in.

Lovely little carbine, isn't it? I'm thinking about working on mine over into a less military appearance, but it's #53,698 on my list of top gun type stuff to do. It's gonna be a while!

I love the 95s. And I have tried the 16/2400. Only load so far. And yes, it is a nice plinker/easy on the shoulder.

16.0 x 2400 does a lot of good things in many a milsurp. I'm not sure who first suggested it in print, it was in American Rifleman eons ago. In the old Burrito Shoots, my few wins came with my G98/40 shooting the Lee 175 8mm bore-rider atop 16.0 x 2400. Such things only occurred when Buckshot & Co. were having a LOUSY day and I was having a superlative day.

Ed Harris came up with the original, or at least wrote it up first, with the 13.0 Red Dot. I used that a lot and later found out it was a very high pressure load. The 16.0 2400 came along a few years after the RD load. I like it just fine!

More great info from Mr. Harris. Imagine that! His writings have kept me out of trouble in this hobby field since the mid-1980s. Bless his heart.
