I generally dislike optics on Leevers...

So much depends on the conditions of the shooting issue. Down in a river bottom on a black cloud overcast at sundown it is rather comforting to have a Micro-Dot on the 405 Jes when there is a cat snarling at me from behind.

Agreed. My complaint or largest complaint about scopes is it ruins handling and OAL size. This effects size, but not as much handling. You can hold/carry it as a lever aughta be carried.
I do have to raise my head a bit but far less then almost any other system.
Time will show if it holds zero or displays any issues. But I do like its looks

Sooner or later the "Eyes" get a vote. I usually opt for a low power scope. Went with a 2.5X scout setup on my Guide gun. It looks like hell, feels a bit awkward but functions with my eyes just fine, thank you.

I think we are going to look into that scout rifle concept, Still able to hold that lever action close to balance with a full grip.

Yeah, I'm there.

Those tiny little "dot sights" aren't much bigger than a receiver sight these days and I've been seriously thinking of putting one on my single-shot 357 Mag, which is one short, svelte little package. The Weaver V3 Classic I have on it now is the berries, for the most part, in that it is compact and the 1-3 variable power is perfect for this gun.

BUT,...

...those tiny little "dot sights" are even MORE unobtrusive, weigh next to nothing and seem to have come a long way in battery life. I especially like the "shake-awake" feature. I just want to at least make sure I find at MOST a 2 MOA dot.

I started researching them last summer and gave up. So much to do and so many to choose from...

I like to have both options available... good peeps to start with -- Them darned u notch sights are getting finicky... and need to try an eyepal... and a method of putting a light fixed 2.5 or 4x on there.

The old 35rem waffletop sc has just a peep, which is plenty for a short range hunting situation... but for longer pokes in the rain/drizzle/overcast... is a bit challenging.

Beartooth bullets had some interesting articles about modifying a weaver rail to fit a peep sighted lever... his discussion covered the 444... and I decided to give that a try on mine.

Gives a best of both worlds option. Peeps in the heavy stuff, scope for long pokes... sorry cw, this might apply more to marlins vs win... but there might be a product which gives you an option... xs sight base??

A 2.5x leupold or weaver is a good option for a lever... trim enough... minor added bulk, but helps get the job done in the adverse conditions.

Jeff, you pretty much narrowed it down with the shake-awake feature. I have a Sig Sauer Romeo 1 micro dot with those features. I'm very happy with battery life and it's 2 MOA dot. I've changed the battery once in four years. It's on my bedside gun (P-320 RX Compact). It gets handled at least half dozen times per day/night. P1080967.JPG
Not pictured is a Crimson Trace rail light. Purchased the Sig version, but the on/off paddles were too stiff, for my liking. So I purchased the CT offering............much better.

I have the XS base on my Marlin 1894 carbine. Designed to work with their peep option. Been using it for many years. I switch back and forth between a Trijicon full size reflex and a Luepold 1x5 with a lighted reticle. Peeps just don't work for me in low light, even with a fiber light pipe front.

That narrows things a bit - knowing what someone here is using.

I should get back on the search this summer. Other ideas here are making me think it would be practical to maintain another sighting option as well.

I have a Williams peep on my Guide Gun along with the Scout mounted 2.5X Leupold. The scope is in Talley QD rings. As much as I like the peep it isn't usable in the first or last 1/2 hr. to 45 minutes of our legal hunting day. Here the scope rules. In use the peep just becomes a back up as I never take the scope off. A red dot would be even more visible in those low light periods.

I've considered doing something similar with my 1894... but have 1 troublesome scope base screw I might need a gunsmith to help remove. I do like the XS front sight post... but understand the low light issues...

Are you a thumbs up or down with the entire xs rail/peep combo??

I dread the thought of a 3' stick (obvious exaggeration) of "rail" on any gun, ever, at all, BUT the thought has sort of crossed my mind for the Contender Carbine to leave the option open to use peep/dot/scope. Not that I'd have them all mounted at the same time, but I PREFER the peep whenever possible, LOVE that little low-powered variable for most situations, and am leaning hard toward a dot, especially after the comments on this thread.

My main objective in going to the dot would be to cut down on clutter on the little carbine, but I see a lot of benefit in the dot otherwise too. A great deal of the "serious" shooting I do with that gun is under less than ideal lighting conditions, USUALLY closer than I'd prefer to be, and has to be QUICK.

The Rossi 92 I had came with a scope base contoured to the barrel and there were D/T'd holes for it hidden under the rear sight. This required a pistol-scope, but it put just a little mass forward of the middle on the super-light 16" carbine, which I find ideal, and it allowed me to leave the peep base mounted. I did not like having a scope on it, but the peep did not work out as well with a flashlight as the scope, but if you had light BEHIND you, like a porch light, the scope was not so convenient anymore.

I keep coming down on the side of the "dot" the more I roll it over in my head.

I'm gonna tell! Winelover didn't have the trigger upgrade done :). FWIW, the Streamlight TLR 7 or 8 fit P320 Compacts like they were born there. I especially like the new style switches on them. A friend also has one on an FN 509 MDR. They hold up well.

TLR fan here too. My SIG rep had a Romeo 1 and tried to sell it to me to go on top of my thermal optic but at the time I wasn't interested. I may look closer, spotted one on Jeff's Asian Peddler's Square for like $109 the other day if I recall, didn't look close it just came up in a search. 2MOA and low profile is the name of the game here.
