I need a bigger hammer

Ball cap unless going out in mid-day, then the boonie hat gets the nod to keep the sun off my ears. Ever try to stalk through the brush while wearing a 3' grass hat? I didn't think of putting my cap in the photo, figured the size 10.5s was enough, but the point is noted. To be honest I was a lot more concerned with getting them drug to the road to be picked up for a quick gutting and rinse out before loading up to take home and finish breaking down and icing. I also skipped the wound photos because of time and too much trouble to stop and wash/dry my hands.

While I was field dressing my three pigs, member JimE sent me a picture of the huge boar he had just killed about five miles away from me on his property with a cast hp from his .375 H&H. It was a bad night for wild pigs in this part if the country.

Didn't notice the feet first time. Those don't seem too big, maybe I am still off scale, but
I kinda had the idea they would be bigger.

Shot a 300 lb hog in Fla many years ago, a LOT bigger, I think, but still not solid on dimensions.

Didn’t even notice the shoes. Being grey I figured they were just another rock.

if you want to eat it.
I have been known to skin a deer on the ground then jerk it up in a tree and clean the insides after, just to get the meat exposed to a breeze.

Congratulations to Ian & JimE, and again to Ian, and again to Ian...yep, seems like no sounder is safe now.

If a nice tree is available, I use the truck & a golf ball to skin deer. There are some utoobs on that for those unfamiliar. Can do half dozen in 30 min at minus5 that way. Works extremely well so long as they aren't spine shot.

That is my method in the hot country/early season that California insists upon setting. If there happens to be a chest of ice OR close access to a store with same (almost never...), only then do I gut out first and fill the cavity with ice. Around here, the deer are just getting into rut as the season closes.

80 lbs of ice and 5 lbs of rock salt is as important as a good rifle and ammo when hunting pigs in warm weather. Gotta get them gutted AND undressed muy pronto, quartered and on salted ice. Lots of fat in the meat and thick limbs holds body heat too well. It was just cool enough the other day that I got away with gutting and rinsing out for the hour trip home.

Finally got a pig with the LR-308 this morning. Been walking the ranch since before sun-up and on my last loop damned near got plowed down by a running string of about 20. Something spooked them on the other side of the ranch I guess, and even more weird was the 4-5 red deer running iut in front. Anyway they were all tiny things and I just threw up and blasted one that was slightly bigger than the rest. She ate dirt DRT, stepped it off at 20 paces. Got a hit on a second one quartering away at about 50-60 yards through the trees but lead it too much and just knocked the bark off of its right shoulder and flipped it, squealing. Missed the follow-up shot when a small oak stepped in the way as I was swinging through  and it got away. I looked for it for two hours but it was gone.

That would have been the thing to do, but I was in a hurry so I skinned it, cut off the quarters and backstraps, and left the rest for the buzzards. I had zero interest in what was going on inside the chest cavity so I didn't even unzip that mess.

The bullet did quite well, too well really but this was a point-blank shot with a load worked up for 300 yards and much bigger pigs in mind.

Entry after cutting off the shattered shoulder:

Exit. I countedbtwo broken ribs going in and two going out. The rib fragments blew out of the hide.

I really wish those targets of opportunity were somewhere close to me.
I would love to go on a hog hunt one day.

I'm sure Ian has enough property that a few tents or camp trailers wouldn't impose too much....
