Mrs. Bisley and I were in TX last February during the big sleet storm. We watched the coverage of the pileup on I-35 mixing bowl above(?) Fort Worth, as semis came piling into cars and six people died in the carnage. Those whom I met asked me how to drive in such conditions without an accident. I told them two things: In snow, you go slow. In ice, you DON'T. Last fall, we saw the signs on the roads announcing 2400+ deaths on the highways for the year, and that was in October.
Drove I-94 from NW Indiana to Milwaukee two years back when a snowstorm hit. Semis barreling past us, only to jacknife a few miles up the road in a big green puddle of coolant. I mentioned this to a truck driver in our church that evening. He told me that it was cheaper for the insurance to cover the damages than to arrive late. No -- seriously. He said this with a straight face.
