IDEAL 311316

I was fortunate to find an old IDEAL 311316 mould.
I just love my old IDEALS.

I use this one to load 30-30 rounds for my Grandson , Trevor.
A neck sized 30-30 case , 5.0 grs. of Titegroup and the 311316 g/c sized to .310" using a Large pistol primer will " chew out a hole " at 40 yards for Trevor.
Trevor shoots these in his Handi Single Shot , 30-30 Win.

Low recoil, super accurate, easy on his shoulder , easy on my lead supply, easy on my pocket book, what is not to like ?

Ben, my favorite 32/20 bullet. I have one that I removed the gas-check shank for pistol and light loads, and a double that I had one of the cavities made into a hollow point by Eric. The solid will shoot through 14 inches of coyote, and the HP will blow up in 4 inches. That is one you need to teach him to cast and load, so you have some to shoot also.

Sounds like VERY GOOD logic to me. :)

Along with the RCBS 32-98-SWC, the Lyman #311316 might be the single-most-useful 30/31 handgun and rifle mould design ever crafted. It slays me that Lyman stopped making these some years back. My example was sourced from an older guy about 10 years ago at the Big Reno Gun Show that attended every show for several years, and always had an interesting array of tools in good order to choose from. He was known as The Mould Guy. The castings from mine in 92/6/2 will just clean up in a .313" H&I die, and shoot very well in my 32/20 rifle and revolver that aren't wide-bodied in the throats. Sized twice (.311"/lubed, .309" second pass) they shoot well in the 30 Carbine Blackhawk, too. The Lee Soup Can (drops ~.3115") is less work and just as accurate, though.

My thoughts on the #311316 are that Lyman's rendition has one flaw, specific to my needs--it casts a little small for my 32/20 and other 32 caliber revolvers, and I am not sure that a gas check is needed for a lot of the usage I give the bullet. That brass mould I was asking about in another thread may take the form of a tool to address this niche. I am still rolling those thoughts around some.

The single best 32-20 bullet there is. Good in pretty much every other 30 cal and a lot of 31 cals as Allen noted. I have a Lyman double and GB Lee 6 banger that' I've never even had warmed up. I still have a bunch ready to load!

If that NOE isn't a clone of RCBS 32-98-SWC, then the Pope is from Oklahoma.

Again, Ben--your photography just MAKES this site.

I have the Lyman 311316 mould and the LEE C309-113-F mould. The two are VERY close to the same. I can't really tell much difference between them other than the smaller crimp groove in the Lyman. I love shooting them in anything 30 cal with a bit of Red Dot. Accurate to 100 yds in everything.

I believe I have a HP version of that mold, have not yet shot it. Looks like I need to try it in
.30-30 for plinking. Probably work wonderfully on rabbits, too.

As to teaching Trevor to cast, my bet is that soon enough he will be wanting to learn that part
of the game, too, unless he has already been asking Grandpa to let him cast.

Biggest difference between the Lee Soup Can, RCBS 32 SWC and the 311316 has been diameter and nose form.

Bill, the HP might be a little much on eatin' rabbits unless you stick to head shots.

So far, Trevor has not asked to do any casting.
He knows what it is and has seen me casting.
I guess all things in due time.

If I could get Ben to cast all my bullets I wouldn’t cast either. Trevor may be far smarter than we realize.

Literally laughed out loud at that, Brad.

I think the "all in due time" comment is right on. Like a lot of things, he'll probably
tell Ben when he thinks he is ready to try it.

Bill.

That is one thing that I've tried not to do with him.
I've not been insistent for him to do anything in the
shooting sports that he didn't feel comfortable doing.

The gauge must not be, if he is mature enough to cast, but if he is mature enough to respond correctly and without panicking, to a malfunction (leak, tip over) with the pot or a visit from the 'tinsel fairy'.

I know a lot of adults I wouldn’t want to be around in a panic situation. I won’t tell anyone how to raise their (g)kids. Ben seems to be doing all the right things, I’m sure he will continue to do so.
