I'm getting one of the Henry SS 45/70. An am looking for just 1 mold for the gun. The main use of the gun would be deer hunting, but wouldn't rule out a Minn. Black bear. An naturally a lot of paper punching.

For a single mold, duel use, I would have to say the Lyman #457193, the original Marlin lever gun bullet. Flat point but with enough rounded nose to carry well to 300 yards. Weights about 410 grains cast from WW's and in accurate down to 950 F/S from my shooting, and enough power to kill anything in North America at 1750.

I have two, because I started out with a Lee and couldn't find the RD 350. I now have it too. The Lee is the 405 HB for my Marlin. It does very well. Working on the 350 now.

I have a NOE 460-405 RF 2 cavity (1 PB and 1 GC)
I bought it for my ruger #3 (45-70)
I've cast some, lubed/sized to .459 (SL68B) but haven't loaded any.
I really like the looks of the PB,
but the GC bullet has such a thin rear band
I could provide you with some samples, if you are currently thinking it'd be a mold you'd consider?
but currently I don't want to sell...as I should really shoot some first, LOL.

Tom's 405 Gr. V mould is the one ! !

Load was 24.0 grs. 2400, Wolf Large Rifle Primer, Accurate 460405V sized .460" with Glen's Black Moly Bullet Lube. Bore was super clean when I finished shooting today. Fired out of my Siamese 98' Mauser.

The NOE 405 and Tom's 405V are very similar. I use an old Lee group buy mould that is similar but goes closer to 420.
Those moulds are re what I would suggest. Great with 24 gr of 2400 for 1350 fps or so. Can also go 1600 plus with many powders.
I own many 45-70 moulds, the Lee GB 420 is all I shoot.

I would have to say optional. I like the economics of not buying gas checks and my 405gr 1400 fps loads do not require them. This load will take care of anything that I will ever hunt.

On the other hand I plan to later on work up a higher velocity load around 1700fps using gas checks to flatten my trajectory some. This project will most likely stay on hold unless I can change my luck on drawing a Kentucky elk tag. I'd be happy with even a cow tag.

I have fired a plain base at 1650 with good results. Two black bear rugs can attest to that.
Unless you are looking at over 1700 fps, and the recoil that comes with it, go plain base

the only 45-70 mold I have is an old school LEE 2 cavity type with a gas check.
it was 'loaned' to me, then the owner didn't want it back. [shrug]
also a user of 2400, sometimes with Dacron sometimes without.
