I'm not bragging when I share this story.
Just thought you might enjoy reading it.
Seems a lot of what we read today is so negative, news doesn't seem to be news unless someone is dying, the details of war, floods, tornadoes, etc.

This is a great story !

Many years back there was a 12 yr. old boy that I tried to help get started reloading ? He and his Dad wanted to learn, but had no money to do it with. I was on a reloading forum and asked some of my friends if they would look on their reloading bench and see if they had " duplicates " of something that they might consider donating to help the boy get started. Over a 2 month period , I received a 6 hole - Lyman turret press. Dies, bullet molds, a powder measure, lube sizers, scales, alloy to cast his bullets with, etc.

I gave him cans of powder, primers, etc.
We spent many hours at the reloading bench learning the " basics".
He and I both enjoyed it.
He learned to load .38 Specials and .308 Win. for his rifles, both using cast bullets.
He continues to reload today.

The only stipulation that I placed on all this was , at age 12, he could not reload by himself.
He had to be with me or his dad when he was reloading until his parents felt
that he had developed enough safety skills to reload by himself.

Seems he has not forgotten my efforts.

His name was Dustin.
He graduated HS 3 nights ago as Valedictorian of his class.
He received $512,000 in college scholarship funds.
He is a fine young man that deserved some help to get him through school.

He wrote this on his Facebook tonight.

Sandy , please let Ben know how much I appreciate what he has done for me. Through shooting and reloading, he gave me several great lessons in generosity and kindness, which I can't thank him enough for. There's many, many more people who have helped get me where I am, too many for me to list in one sitting, so to everyone who has had influenced me in my life, I want to say thank you.

Dustin

Ben,
That is a touching story! I'm sure it makes you feel great inside, knowing how much you have helped shape his life (& I'm sure his future) and that he appreciates it!
I know it gave me a good feeling inside, & I don't even know him.
Ben, You are a great teacher....& I know there are more folks like Dustin out there that have learned a lot with your help!;)
You have a great Memorial Day

And that makes it all worth while. Well done Ben and thanks for sharing.

As for Memorial Day, I will have some awesome Memorial Day type photos up but not til Thurs or Fri. Sort of a surprise from a special location that is very worth remembering on Merorial Day.

I remember your helping them along, and sometimes that's all it takes to get someone stated out well in life.

Great story Ben. Hoping my 15 year old comes out of high school with scholarship money close to that. On second thought, maybe I should send him to you.

Seriously, there is yet more benefit to be had from what you did for Dustin. That will be when he pays it forward to some other youngster later in his life. One of the greater benefits I see to teaching youngsters about casting, reloading and shooting, there are so many other seemingly disassociated lessons learned in the process.

I remember that going on, great news that it all turned out so well. Even better news is that he appreciates the help he was offered and isn't what seems to be more common these days . . . Expects it. :( Proves there really are good people out there. :D

Ben, I bet what you did helps him down the road in far more ways than shooting. You showed him what it means to mentor someone. He will be likely to pass that on to others in the future as he begins to realize just how precious a commodity that is.

Good kids don't just happen, they are created.

Brad,

Being an old retired educator for 26 years, I'm in FULL agreement with your statement above :

" Good kids don't just happen, they are created. "

6 years flies by quickly, I too remember that and can't believe it's been that long. Much more than a hobby, Daniel learned the principles of responsibly managing dangerous things, and a lot about Grace, some of the finer characteristics a man can have.
