Tough decisions this morning.Enjoying my coffee, thinking about the day ahead.

Out of no where a 1 1/2 y.o. four point appears in the field behind the shop.Cool, sip on my Java and enjoy Gods creations.Wait,he ain't moving very well?

Damnit,he's struggling.Grab #3's loaded TC muzzle loader.3-9 Nikon.Yup,he's been "hacked"....low qtr'ing away shot.Somebody has pulled their shot low.Bullet entrance is congealing,but it's exited out his breast plate.

Dbl damnit!Watching him struggling sucks. He is not gonna make it.Long slow death just doesn't do justice to this up and comer.Had to shoot him.

I'd give a weeks paycheck to find the chucklehead who shot him,and give him the chore.Sad,but sometimes you gotta clean messes up.Thanks for listening.

Easier on the mind to think that whoever shot him thought he missed rather than saying to hell with it and let him go. There are idiots however.

What happened to be sure of your shot , if it runs wait 15-30 then go find it in the bed locked up or unconscious ?

After many yr of old reliable doing the job with the load I lost 1 . Good hit ,well inside the terminal range . I grided a mile in the known direction and looked under bushes and rocks down to too small to be hiding a deer . Found a cat lair , 5 more deer but not the 1 I shot . It was very hard to except that it had actually happened . It did and it does. I think that there is a more casual attitude about loosing game where every license comes with a tag vs the places where you get 1 by lottery draw . But then we all ride the hunt ethos rollercoaster .

Glad you were able to "ease the suffering" .

On a lighter note it was a short drag, there's meat in the freezer and it didn't feed the coyotes or ravens .

Short drag my 60 y.o. butt, haha. It was uphill both ways.

In 3D archery terms,at least my shot was a "12".Drilled the ole boy's heart right at a 100.

The original wounding shot was "called" as in OP.Low,under the leg,out the front.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
I went hunting with a guy once who wounded a yearling buck. High shot, too far back, his hind legs were paralyzed.. The little fella was lying about 75 yards away in the clear, thrashing and crying, and trying to stand up. I told the guy to finish him. He told me the deer would shut up in a couple of minutes.

I told him to finish him or I would do it. He told me to leave his deer alone, it'll shut up in a minute.

I made a really nice rear neck shot on a panicked, flailing deer. I simply flipped his switch off.

I never hunted with that man again.
