Looking for a another optic...

Different rifles, different purpose, different optics.

A nice vintage glossy tube Leupold 3x9 simply belongs on an old 1971 made Marlin 444 hunting rifle.

A rock solid Vortex Viper PST 6x24 belongs on a Rem700 300WM custom built for long distance connections.

Having never been a distance hunter and only recently partaking in real
Long distance I can see the negatives to friction on a 1000y range. ;) :p

In this sichuation... 150 is akin ta 10,000 yards. :p
Yep. For what I do, friction is not an issue. I can fiddle with it a bit while zeroing, but once established, that's where it stays. I don't hunt at distances which would make me "twiddle the dials" to get out there. I hold over when I have to. I really don't shoot past the point where trajectory gets to be a challenge.

But, whoever is using it, HOWEVER they are using it, has to find what works for them. I was a mortar maggot for my first stint in the Army and it was fun, but I don't have an FO and FDC now, so I stay withing the flattest part of the trajectory of whatever I'm shooting.

Well the barrel arrived this AM!! Shipper sent it sig required so it came before reg mail Delivery!

She is very nice. "Frosted" stainless. Even more frosted than my 10" Maxi SSK thats a few years old. Its brand new too! Fit perfectly and base was properly mounted and torqued. Quick patch shows not fired and pristine as if machined this AM. Bore scope shows one of the nicest boring and chambering I have looked theu!

Removed the JDJ Bbl with its 3-9 Leupold...
Mounted the SSK and grabbed the scope went on nicely the disoveryOpt Rings fit beautifuly. Man this thing is SO CLEAR AND CRISP its almost un natural. But...

Its just not doing it for me. I know I want its reticule, but dang it... it needs to look right too!!

This is much better...

Leupold's are seldom, a bad choice... Its the small duplex version.

What say you?

I say you picked a winner!

Sleek, svelte. light. I use the same rings for their light weight and compact form, but I found a set of Leupold Rifleman rings in my stuff and don't know where they came from. Lighter, sleeker and I can get the reticle plumb on the first try. Vertically split and only two screws. Don't need three of the monster rings on the low recoilers I'm shooting.

I need to order a couple more sets of those for the new 1-4x20 for the Marlin 1894 and a set for when the "new" 223 barrels shows up. I'm swapping the Vari-XII, 3-9x40 with fine cross hairs off the shorter, slimmer barrel onto the new one.

EDIT: ...and a lot more room to space your rings on those older scopes too.

That forearm wood is spectacular.

That a score!! T/C had weaver make
Many of there optics and they were quality.

Jeffs right and altho, I'll likely end up with a new optic. I should start with what I have and go from there. No $$ spent.

Looking thru, what I have, I found a ol' Burris mini 6x the model with the adj obj. This should suffice and may prove perfect. Altho it's not super light the AO is nice plus for close range accurate shooting. Those old mini's scope line from Burris never were light. But it's a solid optic. Im lucky to have a couple of them.

For possibles, I have my Eye on a Sig LPVO as well a Riton shorty.
I am wanting to hear back from Gary, with his Leupold too.

As an aside, also waiting on my buddy for a ZeroTech 3-9
X40 he promised fee weeks back. But this one was destined for another rifle. (Its bigger than Id prefer and has std Duplex.)

I have a set of Leupold PRW lo ring set. I had a Burris ZEE that I prefer, but I broke one spreading the base to fit! Grrrr. Never did that and expanded these rings many many times with a std acrewdriver blade. I wouldn't expect I would be able to exert enough twist to break the ring... but I did!

I have a family of them 6x Burris mini scopes,,nice glass,,and the clicks are 1/8th minute!!!
