Low vel plain base

Thanks Jim!

I'm pretty happy with traditional lube or LLA vs going with PC. I'm still dialing in loads for the 03's, and making sure they will perform at 200. My heavy is the rcbs 180-fn, and light is the Lee 155.

Also wondering if the NOE 312299 would be a great improvement or not over what I currently have, esp at 200. Going to test my current loads at 50/100/200, and get some data.

Thanks again!

Andy,
Nothing wrong with traditional lubes! Ben's Liquid lube beats LLA; BTW! My jump to PC is just another step for me in cast bullet exploration !
I'm no expert on the 03 but one of the best guys here is Dan ( quicksylver) he has thought me plenty about shooting milsurps from a bench!
I see he hasn't posted in awhile however

Jim, that is an interesting observation! Would you care to elucidate what kind of bullet designs where you have found checkless PC bullets to shoot better? (Bore-rider, loverin, conical nose etc). Does leaving the gas check drift the sweet spot or pressure tolerance of the bullet? Thank you!

It appears that every bullet design that is of Gas check style, when PC'd and shot in "Low Node" 1200 fps or less Without checks has always preformed better then Plain base. (This is not the case if one was to be using tradional lube!)

Bill, our local milsurp matches are at 200yds. Is yours the same?

Do you find the heavier cast being more accurate at distance than let's say a lighter cast like 150gr? did you try gc cast without the gc? Or did you find that the PB version was superior over running them w/o the check.

Thanks!

Mw65, Andy our match is at 100, two ten shot for group then three ten shot for score
The 165 saeco is a plain base, the 314299 is a gas check, they both shoot to the same point the 165 at 1100 fps the 206 at 1550 fps, I have tried without gc but no luck unless the bottom band is pretty wide, other than casual plinking I have not tried at 200 yards

Thanks again for your insight! I'm going to try the 155 & rcbs with and without g/c and try driving them with 2400 powder to see how they work at distance.

JW after reading the blurb about the new federal primers, I understand more how they work - so tend to agree with you on GC vs PC. 303guy showed pics of PP bases with stick powder dings in the base - which appear to not happen with PC. As primers ignite powder with hot slag vs flame, PC stops/reduces base dings. Riviting of shank is more pressure related. I got very good accuracy from the 30/30 with HiTek sans GC with AC alloy @1200 fps. Not what I was wanting but interesting.

I think it was Ian that talked about why the ungas checked gas checked design PC bullets work better then the plain base with PC . I believe it had something to do with base forming a skirt from the residual PC flowing down So the plain base bullets were not perfect on their bases I may have got that wrong Matbe he will chime in
