new guy here I could not hit a barn with them but may try again now that this has come up.

Hello Bruce, and welcome. Like many Lyman designs, there are slight to not so slight variations of 357446. They all seem to prefer being driven fairly hard. As Ric mentioned, this bullet was intended to correct to a degree issues with other designs for 357 mag. The most popular version I'm aware of is possibly the least commonly encountered, the same basic design, but the front driving band is full bore diameter, and about twice as thick as the earlier versions.

I have one of the early unvented Ideal versions of this design, along with a '50s era Ideal vented moulds. Then I also lucked into one of the heavy driving band Lymans. The situation reminds me of a guy I knew on "boolits" who had perhaps 8-10 distinctly different versions of Keiths 452424 45 Colt design. I quit at three moulds for this design. I got the idea.

Please enjoy the site, don't mind the thread drift. At the end the drifts all tie together somehow, and give even more of the back story to the original topic. It's amazing how it works sometimes. And sometimes we just get a little silly :).

Lyman does/did not make their mold cherries in house, but farms them out to another shop. The results are inconsistencies in the bullet specs.I have about 4 of their 311291 designs with minor differences. There is a benefit though, I can fit just about any rifle throat and barrel with one or another of these bullets. This is just one of the joys of using Lyman molds.

I have said this before on this forum but will say again.
My first mold for the 38/357 was the 357446.
I never could seem to get that design to shoot well for me.
I finally got a 358477 4 cavity and never looked back
It is my got to mold for 38/357.
I do have a 358156 that I like for certain applications.
But I generally don`t need the GCed bullet.
Your results may vary.

Picking one up tomorrow... an unvented single cav. Any peculiarities with an unvented ideal I need to know??

No, not really.
If it is clean and your alloy and mould are the correct temp. , it will deliver some fine cast bullets.
