GWarden ( Bob ) posted this mould FOR SALE here in the Swap/Sell section of the forum about a week ago. The mould # was a bit new to me and required a bit of research and reading on my behalf to find out more about the mould.

It seems That the Lyman 358212 mould is a discontinued mould ( when I don't know ? ), as are so many of the other great Lyman moulds of yesteryear .
Lyman suggest an as cast weight of 147 grs.
Based on my reading, I bought the mould from Bob !
Many thanks Bob, for a nice mould.

Many of the people who have experimented with the mould made 2 observations :

  • It is wonderfully accurate in the 38 Special.
  • It also makes an accurate load with 3.0 grs. of B'Eye in the 9mm Luger.

I got outside this afternoon and cast with the mould.
Here are the results.
I'm hoping it will shoot well out of my 9mm Ruger Carbine and my S & W Model 9mm pistol .
It chambers and feeds smooth as silk in my rifle and pistol.

May make me a nice " heavy ball " load for the 9 mm Luger round ? ?
You just have to be mindful of the extra weight of the projectile and select your powder and powder charge from a reliable source as pressures can and will spike quickly with the heavier weight of this particular bullet.

The bullets weigh 148 grs. and are 3590" in dia. and very round.

I have used the 358242 with quite a bit of success in the 9mm Luger.
Obviously , as you can see below , the heavier 358212 differs mostly in the length of the nose vs. the 125 gr., 358242.

I know a lot of folks consider the old RN designs as “uncool” but they are generally very accurate and feed well too. They also work well in revolvers when using speedloaders. Good catch Ben!

Malcolm, you're right, contrary to some popular beliefs, everything that is old isn't necessarily bad.

More of Ben's EXQUISITE photography on display in this thread.

I fell under Uncle Elmer's Siren Song Of The SWC as far as revolvers are concerned, but I still cast and shoot a whole lot of RN bullets for my bottom-feeders. #452374 ALWAYS goes up the ramp, even in balky Series 70 GovMods and Gold Cups. My 32/20 revolvers even see a few RN bullets from time to time--the Lee 100 RN just cleans up in a .313" H&I die, and Lyman #313249 drops at a few tenths short of .315", and cleans up completely in a .314" die for the 32 Magnum x 6" and the S&W M&P x 5" in 32/20. (32/20 chambers and throats are like Duesenberg automobiles--no two are alike). And round-nose bullets flow into revolver chambers like water down a rain gutter, whether from a speed-loader or fed one at a time by hand.

RN bullet designs are ANYTHING BUT "obsolete". Gunrag scribblers that peddle such drivel need to take a day this coming week and go find a life.

Especially as this one was designed for the .38 ACP, not the Super, and .38 Colt revolver. I like round nose for game I'm going to eat, like cotton tails and grouse. Lots of knock down, but not a lot of flesh tearing.
