Midway struck again...

About a month ago I ordered 263lbs pure lead "bricks" from Rotometals fully expecting some loss. Double boxed, fully taped exterior box, and not a single one of the 5 boxes was open anywhere. They also stuffed filler in the interior box and sliced carboard fillers between the inner and outer box. I like their excellent free shipping. ;)
I have always had excellent experiences using Roto, my poor mail lady looks concerned and annoyed dropping off the packages though haha

I'm nice to them, anytime I order lead I let them know in advance and pick my order up from back door of the PO - they know me well. When I picked up my last order, the rural carrier said not to waste my time with USPS tracking, gave me her cell # and said to call and she'd give me the "real scoop" when package will arrive. Love our small town PO!!! :)

We have all heard the saying, “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link”.

The U.S. Postal Service is a LONG chain. Often the weak links in that chain are the distant links somewhere in the middle and not the end links that are the local post offices at the ends of that chain.

I am always thankful for the excellent people that represent the very ends of that chain.

If you have good people at your local Post Office, treat them well.

I started working with Midsouth in the mid-eighties, then added Natchez and Wiley's, which was "in town" (Huntsville) but now defunct. Midway came along and I tried my best to appreciate them, but every order I placed for their "come-on" ads yielded exactly NONE of the advertised specials ever being in stock, and I only ever got the extra non-sale items I ordered. Got the exact same treatment from Sportsman's Guide and placed Midway in the same class. Tried Midway several times again over the years and never once had as good an experience as from others. It actually got worse over time, so they just sort of don't exist to me. No sour grapes, I just don't think of them when it comes to finding what I need. It felt like they were more interested in becoming the biggest that they tripped all over themselves along the way.

Home Depot sure packages stuff well! Got a package from them today and it was impressive.

Packaging, in general, seems to be the least concern of anyone anymore. The packaging INDUSTRY seems to continue to try to innovate, but companies buy into the latest innovation and then muck it all up. Can't hardly get into a food package without mutilating it these days. GLUE must be FREE or someone's paying people to take it, because there seems to be an excess of it in just about everything I have to try to open these days.

Packing, shipping, delivery, all swirling in a vortex right now and prices keep going up and quality keeps going down. Wondering just how this will shake out eventually. I've backed WAY off what I order online and just do without a lot these days just because shipping adds 50% to 30A% of the total order. That's stuff not even subject to the bogus "hazmat" extortion charge.

The materials used for packaging have some expense but in the overall picture, the LABOR to package something is generally going to be the big part of packaging costs.

When you pay people to pack items, you must decide if you want Good or Cheap, because you can't have both.
One person packaging boxes correctly can only get so many boxes out per hour. You can hire more people to meet the demand (more expenses)
OR
You can increase the number of packages that person completes in an hour (less quality and there's a finite limit to that increased output).

Because most packages will arrive intact even if packaged poorly, the economical solution is to package as many boxes as possible per hour with the fewest number of employees. This will result in a small portion of the deliveries arriving with some damage but not enough to outweigh the profit generated by the majority that arrive without damage. You'll annoy a segment of your customers and even lose a few customers, but you will still make a profit. This only becomes a problem when the loss rate exceeds the profit margin.
