New Redhawk

My new Ruger Redhawk now has a nice new shuck to live in on my gunbelt -- a Simply Rugged "Cattleman" that fits like a glove. I'm hoping to get down to the range tomorrow and run a handful of test loads through it, including the 325 grain Mountain Molds RF shown in the photo.

Very nice! Is there piggies in your future? That bullet has two things going for it, lot's of bearing surface and lot's of meplat.

That should work very well.

What sorta load you running with that bullet? Most of my 45 Colt loads are a 300 FP over 10 gr of surplus 105. Runs 950 in my 4 5/8 BH and 1100 in my Marlin 1894 CB. Worked well on a deer last fall.

Rick, that bullet took a big ol' pig about 15 years ago.

The load I originally used with that bullet was 21.3 grains of H110, which gave me about 1230 fps from a 7 1/2" Ruger, and very good accuracy. More recently, I have been shooting that bullet over 20.5 grains of 4227. I've never chronographed this load, but it should be somewhat slower (probably about 1050-1100 fps). It is very accurate.

I have two heavy loads that I used in my 7 1/2" bbl RH. But with Starline brass.

The Lee 340 gr 45/70 bullet, sized to .4525. It casts 335 gr in my #2 alloy. I get 1340 fps with 23.0 gr 296. 1.78 COAL.

The other is the 300 gr Hornaday jacketed 45/70 bullet, re-sized to .4525 and 25.0 gr H4227 for 1400 fps. 1.78 COAL

Both shoot 1 - 1 1/4 @ 25 yds.

I got the RH to shoot Casull level loads and the 25.0 gr H4227 load is the bottom end 454 Casull. I didn't go higher because that is all that I can hang on to! I felt bad for the paper, too. It didn't deserve the extreme abuse :)

That gun, with that load, will generate plenty of energy at both ends. Didn't realize there are Grizzlies roaming around in Georgia.

Glen,

Our revolvers ( and loads ) are VERY similar :

One of my pet loads :

Disclaimer...........This load is safe in my 454 Casull, that being said, I don't recommend you using this load in other 45 Colt revolvers.

I figure this will handle most anything on 2 legs or 4 legs !

Winelover -- I'm no longer in Georgia. I'm now back home in Washington state (and enjoying our local wines!)

Ben -- I haven't played around with the Gould HP in the .45 Colt in many years, but it IS on my things to do list for this gun.

Rick and I were out on the lake fishing, and he enlightened me. IMO, your probably better off in Washington, anyways.
In Michigan, I could find Washington State wines.....not a chance in Arkansas. Lucky to get California wines.

I think I've missed my opportunity to eat breakfast with you.

California or Washington wine? No need in Arkansas when they sell moonshine in the grocery store. :D

Another good mold for the 45 Colt/Casull is the 457191, they usually cast small, you'll even find them marked 456191. They cast in the 290 gr range (mine 291 gr, .456 dia). I got mine about 3-4 years ago and haven't haven't tried mine yet. I haven't shot my 45 Colts in over 5 years.

Ooo boy. I'm not so sure it's the gun that's shoots well. Looks like it's owner does a dandy job too.

How long is the barrel on the srh? I bet that's snappy.
