What Jeff and others wrote from above..... There is something near perfect about 950 fps and a soft chunk of lead. From the .22 Long right through a .69 flintlock hand cannon. When that chunk gets to the target fine application of physics happens real fast.

Fiver. I also get out the DW 357 ..... Still is a favorite. Put the 10" on a while back with our ram basher load. What a blast, Just as accurate as it was 40 years ago. We have that Lyamn 358477 (single cav) down here. Has been very accurate in every wheel it was run through.

Wheel guns forever!!

Bottom feeders just don’t do it for me. Yes, It’s my fault for never having an interest in the semi automatic pistols, I’m trying to warm up to them. If my knees worked better I might feel differently.
Searching for brass vs dumping them in your hand. That's the #1 reason I prefer revolvers! If I didn't reload it wouldn't be an issue, but...

My 2nd centerfire handgun was a Smith M19x4". Still have it, one of the very last guns I'd ever let go. There's a Smith M28x4" too. I'd like to have a couple 357 lever guns, but they are rare birds in my area. Nothing wrong with the 357 that I can think of, IF you handload!

Among my Dad's other stuff, I got a big coffee can full of 358443 bullets he had cast up sized and lubed, and a mostly full keg of Alcan 7, so I've been shooting nine grains with that bullet since and it's a nice load, strong enough to let you know you're shooting, but not oppressive.

I like that Alcan 7, gonna miss it when I finally use it all up.

My first handgun was a S&W M28.
I`ve owned 2 of them.
I`m now down to 1 357, a 6" GP100.
That might just be all you'll need.
I really like my 6" GP - 100 blue , 357 Mag.

I've never found the recoil of a 357 mag round to be a problem in a 4" barreled revolver with decent grips. A snubnose 357 is a whole different ball game. That's downright unpleasant to practice with.
The muzzle blast of a 357 mag is significant in any 357 mag handgun, regardless of barrle length. IMO

Glad to hear others say that. I thought it was just me, but there's something about the 357s blast which just offends my head and its contents.

The first revolver I ever shot (at about ten, I think) was a OM Super Blackhawk, shooting the Lyman 429303 over a max charge of probably 2400. My dad was fascinated with that bullet and liked to shoot it as fast as it would go.

I did not find the blast of that round annoying at all and fell in love with sixguns at the first shot, but the 357, at full tilt, is one that I don't enjoy shooting a lot of.

I don't think I've ever shot a .357 magnum for fun.
It's something I do to maintain a skill. I can shoot them OK but I don't care to do it much.

Recoil has never been an issue for me but muzzle blast is a different story.
A friend has a short barreled G3 in 7.62. It's a beast. I put two rounds through that thing, while wearing ear plugs and ear muffs. I handed it back to him and never want to pick it up again.
I've been beside people shooting 375 H&H rifles and they were not as bad.

My .357 collection is...
16" Rossi 92
20" Marlin 94
24" octagon Marlin 94
Taurus Tracker 7 shot 4"
S&W 2" J frame
Colt King Cobra 6"
Most all get shot with .38's
Some mild .357 from time to time but rarely full power loads.

On my "To Do" list, is to load some Long nose WC ammo tailored to my DW Mod 14.

"PhotoBucket" That's how long ago it was,
when I cast some of these, and still haven't loaded any yet, LOL.

900 FPS is a definite velocity 'Sweet spot" for a lot of handgun calibers. Most of my Magnum revolvers--32 through 44--get standard-weight cast SWCs run at 900-950 FPS. Full-tilt magnum revolvers are gnarly after a while. A practice session with the 357s is usually 50-100 loaded with #358429 to 900-950 FPS to get warmed up, then a finish with 25-50 carry load clones (125 grain JHPs @ 1425 FPS.

Not too long ago I went with a friend to a local indoor range in south San Bernardino. There were 3 other shooters who in a past life I would have profile-stopped and likely found all manner of contraband within their roach coach. They were enjoying themselves popping away with 9mms and 40s tilted sideways, as is de riguer in Grand Theft Auto or whatever other X-Box or Youtube video they use as training aids. I'm generally not a killjoy, but I found their antics annoying. I had a full box of my 125 grain practice ammo along for the ride. I told Gary to plug & muff up. He did. I cut loose with several cylinder-fulls of these critters (loaded with H-110) through the 4" 686. Donner und blitzen. Maybe the trio of ne'er-do-wells just ran out of ammo, dunno. But they were gone when the 50 rounds of full-tilters were expended. Gotta love ball powder.

Years ago, I owned a 3/4 ton diesel truck. It was stock but those things aren't quiet even in stock form. Occasionally, (when I was lazy) I would take it to one of those self-serve car washes when it was easier to spend $1.00 than to drag out a hose at home (usually when it was cold and muddy). If the car wash had customers "sharing" their music with all of the patrons, I would simply let it idle while I was there. Amazingly, everyone "sharing" their music would turn it off or leave. Then I would turn the engine off.

Can't argue with any of the good qualitites that people attribute to the .357, but for recreational shooting I find the BOOM from a large bore handgun shooting a subsonic bullet to be much preferable to the supersonic CRACK that .357 and 9mm loads have. It gets on my nerves after a while, even with hearing protection.
This is the key for me too. I just can't take the CRACK. As a result, I wind up shooting lighter loads (typically, a 158 gr bullet at around an actual 1000-1050 fps from any particular .357). That puts the loads in the 38 Special +P range. My factory load of choice lately is whatever version of the FBI load I can scrounge.

It's the sharpness of the recoil in the 357 I don't care for , but I puss out just over 1100 fps with a 7.5 45 Colts BlackHawk.
A buddy had a Mass State Police marked Highway Patrolman in SS that wasn't bad to shoot full house 357s in . Mom's OM 5-5/8 BH is actually as comfortable as the big S&W . The 66 clone made my wrists hurt and often "kissed" my middle knuckle. Every time I've shot a full bore load in the 6" Sec 6 I've been instantly reminded that the middle knuckle of my middle finger is very likely to be bleeding if I finish off the cylinder . A new grip I hope will get me below the trigger guard .
