Old Ways

It is very disappointing to want a favorite product that is no longer available. And then to realize that I still have some, somewhere, but just can't remember where I stashed it!

Looks like where I grew up, no thanks. Out houses and coal furnaces were not that much fun. My grandpa's were born in 1882 and 1892, asked why didn't you all smile that much in pictures, answer because nothing to smile about. Those old men could work the White off Rice. ;)

Almost Heaven West Virginia. Yeah, we still got gravel for 2 miles out to reach SR45. Then 3 miles up Great North Mountain to Mill's Gap and another 5 miles via SR51 to I81. Then 12 miles to Martinsburg north or 16 miles to Winchester, VA south. Just far enough out for comfort, but close to good medical, Martinsburg WVU Medical Center, etc.

Within a mile of me I have neighbors whose place looks just like that picture. I buy honey, eggs and free range chickens from them. I hunt deer on their property to help them fill their damage tag allotment. Based on their acreage and current agricultural use they are allowed 12 antlerless deer annually. I shoot the deer for them. They do the butchering and bring me a share of the meat and all the apples I want.

Good neighbors.

Glaciers

Burned coal till 2011, first got electricity in 1997, actually got landline phone in 1994, running water 1981. Things were complicated in certain ways, but simple where it counts.
When we had an outhouse, no grid electricity and carried water 5 gallons at a time. Life felt pretty good.
But when we got grid power it made life in the winter, much easier. Saved me one and have hours each day.

Edit: on supplemental generators
