Popularity Of The 25 Calibre
https://books.google.com/books?id=Y...QhIMAk#v=onepage&q=ideal bullet 32-40&f=false

Chicago Journal of Commerce and Metal Industries, Vo 66, no. 1, Jan 3, 1895, pg 23

There has no cartridge worked into the good graces of the small bore cranks equal to the 25 calibre, it has been popular from the very first and its popularity is on the increase as is evidenced by the many modifications of it. The original cartridge is the 25-20-86, same as now made by the factories. The 86 gr. bullet was thought by many to be too heavy on account of key-holing, so the Ideal Manufacturing Company, New Haven, Conn., worked out a series of bullets varying in weights from 46 to 26 gr., the 77 gr. became very popular immediately, the cranks however desired to use the heavier ballets. This led to barrels being cut with a quicker twist running down from one turn in 18 inches, to one turn in 8 inches, as per Mr. Pope of Hartford, Conn., and Mr. Lowe of Fitchburg, Mass., who are making special barrels.

Bullets, L-R

25720 - 46 to 96 gr Perfection or specific weight
25731 - .25 Leopold Paper Patch (cylindrical) Ed. No ideal on the weight.

This, of course, required more powder and greater velocity, so these gentlemen have reduced the well known 32-40 Marlin shells at the muzzle so as to be correct for the 25 calibre bullets. Great work is being done with these arms, as may be noticed from time in the leading sporting Journals. The Ideal Company is kept busy administering to the wants of these shooters. E. A. Leopold of Morristown, Pa., sketched what he desired for a bullet (cut of it is here shown), and sent it to Mr. Barlow of the Ideal Company, who worked it Tip into the well known cylindrical mould which enables the user to get any weight he desires. The wonderful work done with this bullet is well known.

The Ideal Company also informs us that they are now ready to meet the demands for heavier 25 calibre grooved bullets, as per cut shown herewith. The company are also prepared to furnish the "Perfection adjustable" that will cast the whole series of weights, it is said that the extreme point is exactly the same shape as the 25 calibre but is longer to the crimp shoulder, so that the 32-40 Marlin shell reduced down to the 25 calibre, with this ball inserted, will be exactly the same length as the standard 32-40 Marlin cartridge, making ammunition that is properly proportioned for repeating rifles, which we understand the Marlin Fire Arms Co., are now at work on, the rifle will be called the 25-36 Marlin, model '93.

The cut of the regular 25-20 bullets will show our readers the difference in the length of the point and the weights as compared with the 25-35. Of course for light weight or short range bullets, the series of the 25-20 will be better balanced, but where the long ball is desired, the 25-35 will be the best.
