Powder Measure vs. Powder Drop

In the community stables we have bolts and gas guns in 223/556 and 6.8 . Slides in 32 Rem , 06' , and 06' bolts . Bolts and breaks in 30-30 but no levers . Mostly slides in shotguns but also SxS , O/U , single breaks and a recoil auto .....no gas guns .

45s come in lever , auto , DA , SA , bolt , lever and break in an assortment of cases from GAP to Raptor rimless and AR to 45-70 rimmed .

Platform for a particular cartridge might be the best term where several very different guns are so chambered .

More then 50yrs ago, I was at a big public Rifle Range with My Dad & little brother. I was shooting one of the "Family" Guns. A M1917 sporterized prior to WW2 by My Grandfather. Chambered in .257 Robert's.
A stranger walked up to My bench, pulled a cartridge out of the box I was using, and said ".25 bob huh?"
Heard My Dad swear at someone for the only time; "F*** OFF, you idiot". My brother and I were probably more shocked than the stranger.
Dad used cartridges and ammo interchangeably, clips and magazine too.
I would've never, EVER corrected Him. Which is why I still have 29 of my own teeth.

I only break from gun terminology orthodoxy at one point. I grew to manhood around 45 Automatics with clips in the grip. Out of respect for Texas heritage I still use those terms instead of "1911 pistol" and "magazines". A man has to have some cultural values! I won't have some Yankee Esso Bee telling me I don't know my clip from a hole in the ground!

Nothing gets me more the when I am training a new shooter the basics of gun safety.
A task which seams to get thrown on me a lot lately. Guess people trust me with their kids.
Then someone observing, who probably has no clue on the safe handling of a gun, corrects me on a "supposed grammatical error" in the middle of my safety lesson.
Me reply usually is, excuse my but I am not talking to you. I believe, at this moment, teaching this young person how not to shoot him-herself is more important then you and I having an English lesson.
Got some really nasty looks, but the instigator usually walks away after that.
It also works for b.s.r's , just replace the words English lesson with \History lesson.

I do not suffer fools gladly.

If a person is simply ignorant concerning a subject, that is understandable. We were all ignorant at some point.
Willful stupidity is not to be tolerated.
When a person who has been afforded the opportunity of education refuses to accept that education, I don't have to crawl in the gutter with them.

Personal Reaction: My own stuff kicks in when "powder drop"is used to describe powder measure, My stuff is to expect some rinky-dink stuff repeated from the net. To follow my bias a judgement is made about sharing without experience. This toxic stuff is called "automatic thinking." Even owning my bias, it's tough to get around it. More extreme, for me, is the term "smoke pole." I have recently encountered "Bee" for Weatherby. In the right mind I do know these things are colloquialisms. Problem is that these things are given too much power here. It's about my getting the knickers in a twist over nothing.

I've never thought of "Powder Drop" as a device/noun but rather an action/adjective.
You use a Powder Measure to "drop" powder.
Or it's a device that causes a Powder Measure to automatically drop powder from a Powder Measure.

Just My thoughts

P&P, you sound exactly like me in my youth. However, I eventually learned that all that got me was miserable, alone, and correct. Despite my monumental efforts, those who share the world with me went on unchanged. It isn't our responsibility nor even right to assume the role of straightening others out on "facts". Bring some light to a receptive person when possible, but otherwise, let the world right itself. Now, if it seems hypocritical to dispense unsolicited advice about dispensing unsolicited corrections/edifications etc, it is, but only to illustrate the point that you will remain unchanged after me dispensing some universal wisdom to you that I perceive you need. See how that works? Oh, if only people were generally open-minded, egoless, and introspective.....

Sorry, Ian, I am not open minded, egoless nor introspective.

I am the most humble person I know. Which is saying a lot, because I am also the most perfect. Why, I have never found myself to be wrong.
If I were ever to make a mistake it would be a rare and amazing thing.

"it's not a lipstick, its a bullet shell! This is the "jectile, this is the case where the powder goes and this is the primer that makes the powder "splode"

The above from my 4 year old Granddaughter explaining to the girl in the dollar store when asked why she was buying a small ball-point pen in the shape of a loaded cartridge for her Grandfather's Christmas present.

Kids get a pass. Adults get a pass if they have not had the opportunity to learn.

A 25 year old college graduate with a degree in communications that got a job as a news anchor and insists on calling every police weapon a "service revolver" (even the ones made by Glock) - does not get a pass.
Nor does a 30 year old suburban, gun hating, soccer mom that labels every long gun as an "assault rifle".
And I don't have much tolerance for the high school drop-out that thinks it's cool to call a hand gun a "gat" or "Dem Joints".

I'm not an English professor and I don't expect every person to speak the Queen's English; BUT I do not have to crawl down in the gutter with people that WANT to be stupid.

Cordite was put back into production in England for WW2 because they could not manufacture enough modern powders. The last reference I can find for it says that it was used in the early ejection seats in British jet fighters.
